3.0 exhaust
« on: Jul 27, 2008, 11:18:37 PM »
From my humble little knowledge of the toyota's 3.0 engines, I have noticed the stock exhaust on the pass side runs up and behind the engine/bellhousing area and plums into the driver side. This to me seems that the engine does not run as effient as it could. could you cut the pipe at the pass side and run it down to the frame/ transfer case area and back over to the driver side before the cat and the o2? Would this help it breathe like it sounds it should? I hear somebody makes a header kit for this . Is opening this type of exhaust noticible in power/mpg? Cost effective? For "off highway use?"  :talkingn:

Downey makes headers and you probably will see about 10 hp but could save a valve :burnout:

I prefer Thorley myself.

Thorley is roughly similar as far as benefits and HP gain.  Oh - these also run LOTS cooler.  Stock V6 designs tend to have a huge heat "island" where the exhaust is routed over to the other side.  This of course tends to be hard on anything nearby as well as get the hood very hot.

I have an 88 V6 4runner with downy headers on it. have fun getting the cross over pipe out ;)

Truck runs much better with the headers but hooking up the smog isn't much fun. I ended up using 1/2" copper pipe and fittings from the header to the smog crap on the passenger side engine bank (house plumbing stuff) and soldered it together.
I get better MPG and it runs a little cooler
