3.4 or 4.3 Swap?
« on: Apr 14, 2008, 12:28:09 AM »
Well In the future I'm planning on swapping out the old 22r for something a little bigger and can't decide between the 3.4 or the 4.3.
Is any one better then the other or is would be more of a cost thing. :help: Kinda looking towards the chevy just because.

Well let me know and are there any links or articles thats out there to read?

This is one of the reasons but now i need to find all the components. who makes a adaptor for the 4.3 to toyota tranny or should i go with a chevy trans due to the increase in power/torque?

Downey and advance adapters should both have bellhousings to run a toy tranny behind the 4.3.  I'd love to stay toy, but the 3.4 is more of a peaky engine, whereas the 4.3 is more of a torquer.  I'm personally planning on running a buick 3.8 at some point because I already have it, but it's also a good in between engine and fits in an early toy much nicer.

remember tho the buick 3.8 is NOT the same as a 4.3 or sbc

it has its own unique bellhousing bolt pattern....pre-3800 RWD V6 uses the BOP (buick, olds, pontiac), bellhousing pattern that it inherited from its aluminum V8 counterpart, an oddity of both the FWD and RWD 3800 V6 is that although it is a 90° V6, it uses the GM 60° V6 bell housing.....so ya cant use a 4.3/sbc swap housing....

There is another option if you want to do some homework.  The Lexus/Toyota 1uzfe 4.0 v8, which is the precurser to the Tundra v8,  is readily available in junkyards for $500 or less and uses a 2wd version of the a340f transmission used in 96-02 3.4 litre taco/4Runner v6.  It also is an aluminum block so its lighter than both the 3.4 or the 4.3.  There are several wirteups on this swap on www.lextreme.com

AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

i went with the 4.3/th350/np205 combo.  i chose the 4.3 b/c of availabilty and i was planning on running propane and i want a simple reliable setup, something i can actually work on if need be. The 3.4 would still have tons of wiring to fool with.  I'm not scared of wiring ( i work for an electronics company), i just want to simplify and eleminate all that.  my truck had the 3.0 and i was always woried about have electronic issues, but the poor thing didn't last long enough for any issues to come about.

Assuming you have a 5 speed in it already, be warned the 22r trans will not hold up to the 3.4 or 4.3.  For the 3.4 swap, finding a wrecked Tacoma would be the best option.  Use the Tacoma tranny and a Marlin adapter to a gear driven toyota t-case.

If you want to use that 3.8 (sweet motor- friend has it in his Jeep), you'll need a tranny from a 2.8L S-10.

Thanks guys it looks as though I'll be looking for a Chevy motor due to the fact its more available here in Hawaii.  might be changing out the 5 speed for an auto setup but it all depends on what comes along...
