Haven't done it yet, but im in the process of swapping an 85re into a 81.  Yes it needs to be reffed.  1-800-622-7733 is the number to contact the Smog Ref in your area, you will talk to a random person on the phone, if they cant answer they will leave a message with your local ref to call you.  The fresno ref seems real nice.

Best i got, i didnt search for a guide here on Marlin, im sure there is a walkthrough though.  I'm planning on using my stock gauges with the 85, we will see how that goes.

I dunno what a ref is Im sure that is some sort of legal thing about doing the motor swap yada. But I know of a guy who swapped a 4.3 in his runner and went threw deq and since the toyota needed less emissions to pass then the s10 the vortech was in he passed flying colors and they didnt ask questions efi motors tend to run cleaner if you didnt want to do that if im talking out of my ass than sorry lol.

But for the other part. I haven't done one myself but I do have an 84 in my shop thats efi swapped and they basically just took the efi harness pulled the wire loom off it while they still knew what everything went to and taped everything with labels. After that they cut what wasn't needed and kept what was wired it all the the stock harness using plugs from the 84 I believe and put the ecu under the dash. The things they wired seperatly were oil pressure gauge and temp gauge those are not stock harness but they are stock gauges everything else is ran into the stock harness. I know I live miles and miles away but once you get into the swap I do have a refferance and can look at it when you have questions. Also they did delete a lot of wiring its pretty much ran off 10 wires not litterally but for an efi motor there is not much wiring at all. It runs amazing though and has no problems
