Calling all 4runner rear window gurus!!
« on: Dec 29, 2007, 12:09:43 PM »
on my runner, i disabled the rear window, wiper ect. many years ago. now that im a little older and more picky, i decided that i would like everything in my truck to work.

so i sourced all the parts at pick and pull
and installed them

at this point-my rear window will go up and down with the switch, and the key in tail gate-GOOD!!
THE REAR DEFROSTER WORKS!!

ive tested all the sensors in the gate, on the top, and all the relays, they work

the problem is-the rear wiper does not work.
i can supply 12v at the motor, and it will work, i can supply 12v at the switch and it will move. the switch is good, tested it on another runner.

so whats the deal??

i know the window needs to be fully up for the wiper to work, it is and the switch in the tailgate is being activated, so im at a loss as to why it will not work, all the peices fit...poop!

If your putting power to the switch at the center console & it works then it sounds like your power source from the fuse panel to the switch in the center console. Did you check the fuse?

We messed with those wipers on our 4Runners for awhile, but i've now come to the conclusion that the cap on the 4Runner is really just a glorified topper. I don't have a wiper on either of my toppers, why do i need one on the back of a 4Runner? You don't see them on the rear windows of many vans, either. Probably the manufacturer of an SUV is just required by law to have a wiper on the rear.

So now i just remove the motor and wiper, and fiberglass over the holes. A little paint and it looks factory, and i don't have to worry about it failing, or the window refusing to go up or down cause the wiper isn't in the perfect position.

as far as i know, there is not a fuse for the wiper, and if theer was, it would control the window as well, and the window works

Look at the control box behind the panel of the drivers side seat belt. Should be a brown box, that's about 3x4. Disconnect it and open it. Probally will be all kinds of green fuzz on the circuit panel.

The control box has the grounding circuit in it. If you are supplying 12v at the switch and it works, you have completely eliminated anything wrong in the tailgate. I had the same problem with mine!

Look at the circuit panel when you get it out. It'll have Green fuzz "resistance" or look for a burnt circuit. I'm pretty confident that this is your problem. Roger Brown  aka 4crawler.com has an article on it. Shows how to bypass it and other stuff. About 90% of 4runner tailgate issues are with that box or a broken wire at the harness between the tailgate and body.

I was thinking it may just be the switch that says the window is not all the way up and if thats the case it wont turn on.

theer is a switch, in the tail gate, that throws a relay when the window is fully up, this switch is working. so that isnt the problem, but similar symptoms

Good thread!  My back window worked in my 84 4Runner up to a couple of months ago but it's not working anymore.  I have a new tailgate to replace my dented one.  I'll be swapping all my stuff over and then troubleshooting it to see why it's not working.
