CALLING ALL CHEVY/GMC GUYS AND GALS: PLEASE ASSIST ME
« on: Mar 16, 2008, 10:53:58 PM »
Ok, we picked up a new 4x4 today. It is a 91 GMC 2500, but it has six lug axles. I am confused. Please give me some info on it like do I buy 1500 parts for it, or 2500 parts for it. 1500 lift kit, or 2500 lift kit. Thanks!

you buy the 2500 lift kit, just tell them it is the light duty truck.  you need the heavy springs.

So any parts I will ever order for this truck are 2500 parts? like the CVs and stuff for the IFS too? Lift kit probably will never happen unless it becomes my truck, I am more concerned with normal wear parts

should be. 3/4 and 1 ton trucks use different CV axles than the 1/2 ton units.

Thats what I was thinking. But since it has what appears to be half ton stuff, I didn't know if the IFS stuff was half ton or the bigger stuff

Yeah, yeah, I know that. So if I go to NAPA, I say I need part x for a 2500 with 6 lug axles? And they should be able to figure it out from there?

I had an 88 2500 6 lug. If I remember correctly the 6 lug is a 7200 gvw (light duty 2500)& the 8 lug is an 8200 gvw (heavy duty 2500). It was already lifted so I don't know what kit it had.

That is almost correct. It is 7200 or 8600 GVW. GM did that from 88-98. No matter were you go for your parts, If it matters they are gonna ask you if its 7200 GVW (light Duty) or 8600 GVW (Heavy Duty).
