EMPI or Weber
« on: May 03, 2008, 11:06:12 AM »
Need a new carb for my '82 22R.  Has anyone here run an EMPI?   I am leaning towards the Weber because I don't know much about EMPI :dunno:.  Any advice is welcome.

Thanks. THe EMPIs are cheaper but I am leaning towards the Weber because of their reputation.  Hope someone here has one and finds this topic.

I have a 34/34 weber on mine and it is great on the road  :stopit: but if your going to wheel it I would say go with the ol' stocker :yesnod: webers dont like vert.   :twocents:

If your a hardcore rock crawler, go with factory, if not weber will be good!  Some of you might not remember that Marlin used to wheel his old 22r/20r motor (pre 3rz) with a weber, but would smog with a factory.  I loved Weber for it's simplicity and awesome power and better MPG on hwy!  Mine ran real good off road too!

I know EMPI carbs are really big with the guys who run Baja bugs or sand rails and the like, but I know nothing about them. Right now I have a Weber K747 (34 DGEV) that I scored on Ebay as a kit for under $200. Weber carbs are noted for their very good bottom end power response because of their renowned accelerator pump. When I put the carb on, at first the engine ran horribly. I did some more research and read that Webers do not like the pulses coming from mechanical fuel pumps. I went out and bought a 30 dollar Holley fuel pressure regulator from a local shop and a fuel pressure gauge, installed them and set the float level on the low side and the engine purred like a kitten. It still does six months later. The carb makes the truck burp and fart and blow big black plumes of smoke on angles though. PM me about smog, K746 is outlawed in the Democratik Kolorfornia Republik.
I've got the most liftedest truck in town, that little jap truck done stand no chance gainst my Chevy. My Chevy gots a V8 more lift an bigger tires, and an exhaust system, whats yer tuna can got, a V4, and them tires look like they is offa Saturn Corulla. The dealer instulled my lift, so ya no its done right, you just try to foller me throo them rocks an see what a reel truck can do.

Just ordered the 033B Weber smog legal kit and a Weber jet kit to get it all tuned just right. I will post some pictures when I get it all!

Just got the Weber yesterday and have it installed, but I just need to tune it now.  The only problem I have is with a few vaccuum lines and the Stock air cleaner adapter which is too tall.  The adapter is about an inch too tall. Has anyone else had this problem?

Crap.... I am refering to the metal adapter to use the stock air cleaner, not the filter itself.  I already have a K&N so I wanted to use the stock air cleaner assembly.  Sorry if there was any confusion. :hammerhead:

Problem is the aircleaner to weber transition is too tall, and the hod barely closes if it were kept.  Maybe I will just modify it.  LCE also makes custom adapters for manifolds, carbs, and air cleaners.  Maybe they already have something?
I can get pictures maybe tonight if I have time.

i have a weber to stock 20r air filter. the hood shuts fine. but i,m running a 22r with a 20r head and the stock filter well not work well above 5000rpm, so I'm back to running the weber filter. the 22r filter must flow better.

The 22R K&N does great, hence the reason for wanting to keep it. This is what is too tall:

I put an EMPI on my truck, looks exactly like the 32/36 I had on my 77, unbolted the 38 and used all the old weber stuff to put the empi on my 83. One thing I really noticed was the truck fired right up and drove great with out screwing around and tuning the carb. I remember messing with my old weber for weeks to get it running right. My truck had a weber 38 on it and the best I ever managed was a touch over 13MPG, my best so far with the empi has been a little over 19MPG. I can be fairly gas happy and still get 15 or so MPG.
