help with diesel info
« on: May 24, 2007, 09:39:45 PM »
I found a 1985 reg, cab long bed in my area for cheap, but it has the 2l-t turbo diesel. I can't really find much info on these and i am just not sure whether it would be worth it to even consider buying this truck. i would like to make it into a trail rig, but i can't find anything about horsepower and torque ratings, or what transmission and transfer case it has. i would like to do a dual case setup, but i'm not sure if i could. i guess any help and info you guys could provide would be awesome.  thanks in advance.

what about the transmission and transfer case, are they something i could use with a MC dual adapter? and any idea what they had for stock gears? oh yeah, it only has 137k on the odometer.

Sure.  Here's the running gear in this:

1984 Toyota 2L
stock 5 speed transmission
Marlin 4.70 t-case
1984 front and rear Toyota axles with Longfields 5.29's ARB's IFS disk brakes etc.

You can do anything you want with that engine/trans.

1988 long wheelbase Samurai

1984 toyota 2.4 liter 2L diesel motor
1984 toyota G52 5 speed tranny
1984 toyota front axle, 5.29 gears, ARB locker and high pinion 3rd member
1984 toyota rear axle, 5.29 gears, ARB locker and V6 3rd member
Marlin 4.70

Awesome rig!  Great pics; I like the labels you added to the pic of the engine bay.

You must be pretty well versed with the 2L.  Are you aware of any alternator upgrades (high output mods or replacements) for the stock alt.s on the 1L/2L engines?

I imagine just about anything could be done, but with respect to the extra duties that the diesel alt.s must perform in relation to brake function, I am wondering if you came across a convenient mod or upgrade.  I have searched and found nothing.

The blocks are similar between all the L model engines and that means when the 2LT gives out upgrade to the 5LT and run the existing bellhousing from the 2LT especially if you've upgraded the tcases in the mean time.

I would be interested in buying the engine,  if you decide not to do the swap.

I have a 2l.  Mine is swapped in and I love it.  It has two batteries, a huge alternator, almost no electronics.  Good mileage.  ect.

Hopefully you got this truck. I swapped a 2lt into my truck and it is great. Lots of info on these engines can be found at toyotadiesel.com.
