22re knocking? Where to start
« on: Sep 17, 2007, 07:46:47 PM »
Well I am picking up another 89 4x4 reg cab pretty cheap this weekend. Great body, 5spd, interiors rough, 3" body lift, 33" gumbo mudders on 15x10 aluminum wheels, Broke right axle (IFS) for $600.And it does come with a title. Its a pretty good deal in my opinion. Just got back from looking at it. The only thing I noticed is the 22re is making a loud (very loud) knocking at idle, and gets louder and faster with gas. Im no toyota moter tech, so I was just curious were to start looking. Someone told him it might be a wrist pin, but I have no idea :headscratch:

I would think bottom end. I would say a rod. either end of it, wrist or connecting rod. Also, may be a valve smackin the piston. Any way you look at it, its bad. Does your friend still run it around like that or does it just sit, might ask how long its been rattlin. Also, drain the oil, look for pretty glitter oil. that will tell you if it is bottom end is donezo!

Ok, the oil was on the full mark, (didnt check for shavings) The guy drove it bout 8 miles from his house to a shop, and it has been parked since. May be better to find another 22re to drop in.

Ya that would your best bet or if you feel like tackling that engine, you could tear into that engine and find the problem and fix it or rebuild it since you would have her apart. If your not into doin it the hard way then ya, find a fresh engine and stick ur in.

I HAD A TOYOTA 22RE THAT HAD A BAD KNOCK IN IT AND IT DIDNT SEEM TO BOTHER THE TRUCK AS FAR AS POWER. I BOUGHT IT WITH THE KNOCK, COME TO FIND IT WASNT A ROD KNOCK OR NOTHING MAJOR THE MOTOR WAS TIRED AND HAD BAD PISTON SLAP, A WAY TO CHECK FOR PISTON SLAP IS START THE VEHICLE REV THE ENGINE TO ABOUT A GRAND OR SO HOLD THE BRAKE AND EASE OFF ON CLUTCH AND IF THE THE NOISE STARTS TO FAID AWAY THEN U PROLLY HAVE PISTON SLAP, AND I WOULD SAY RUN IT TO DEATH IF U DONT GOT THE MONEY TO REBUILD IT

If it is a connecting rod bearing, you will need to pull the crank and measure the rod journals with a micrometer. If they are not up to spec, and are galled, you will need to have them ground and polished, and will have to get oversize bearings. The other option would be to find a donor engine with a bad top end, and either swap the good parts in, or swap the block entirely. I just replaced the crank in my 22r-e because of a spun bearing. I had an old engine to get the crank out of, and it was in very good shape, so it went right in. But, I had to pull the engine to swap it out.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

my old motor had the same sound but the thrust washers had 1/2inch movement and the rod bearings were .75
