1st gen sunroof questions Might have found a company
« on: Jan 29, 2008, 09:11:49 PM »
Well my 82 toyota has a sunroof, which I thought was cool when I bought it. But since Ive been dring it in the rain, I find that its like driving a shower.

Now the thing about the sunroof is that, I dont think its an OEM one. I think its aftermarket. I know that the old 1st gen ones look just the same as the 3rd gen ones too, because my dads has that handle and the button. But mine doesnt, its just a lever.

So I have 3 ideas.

I was wondering if there is a place that can sell me weatherstripping to it
Or I will see if I can put a stock OEM one in
or I will take it all out and weld a piece of sheetmetal on it.

So what would be the best thing to do?

Where is the link for those fake sunroof stickers on ebay when you need them... lol, jk. I would try and keep the sunroof if at all possible, because 1st gens look sick with them, and I wish my truck had one for that "open top feeling" so option 3 is a no-no in my book. Other opinions?

I do like being able to see the sky while Im in the truck. My friend mentioned that you can see everything in my cab.
Left, Right, forward, back, up AND down because I have no shifter boots so I can actually see my right tire from where I sit. I guess that its makes self spotting easier.

I do want to keep the sunroof though. I dont know if the OEM ones do this, but mine actually releases and comes out, so I can have a fully open sunroof... for trail rides in the summer.

Help please  :help: :help: :help: :help:

The factory sunroof on my 86 leaks air on the freeway.  Super loud inside and the wind is actually lifting the front of the sunroof glass.  Come to find out with a worn seal it's a loose fit.  I went to Home Depot and in their weatherstripping section bought a roll of 3/8" double row weatherstripping.  The cross section kinda looks like a double tube bumper with one side flat with adhesive.  Since my factory weatherstripping is on the glass I could stick this new stuff on the perimeter of the body (where the stock seal contacts).  This, in essence, doubled up the seal and worked great.  If your seal is on the body you'll have to add the new rubber to the glass instead.

Does the sunroof have drain holes in the substructure? If not then it is after market requiring him to find another type of seal. Perhaps a trunk seal out of car, cut and rubber glued to fit! (made this repair to a friends truck)

check out automotive stores as well, they've got replacement weatherstripping that has a groove that fits over a glass edge.

I found a company name on the sunroof. It says in small letters "HBI" So now I'll try and go find that company. If anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated.
