EFI swap ID and need a helping hand!
« on: Jan 12, 2008, 01:44:49 PM »
Lil Blue had and engine swap somewhere along it's life... and our problem is trying to ID what year it's officially from!

 ???

It's an 85 SR5 4x4 with an 87 - 88 - 89? 22RE  possible Cali Smog?

 :hammerhead:

It is NOT an 85 22RE efi... we have an original 85 4Runner and they are different.

We put in a new intake Manifold ( THANK YOU EARLKANN!!!  :ladys-man:) and the Air box he sent (85) has less ports in it than ours does...
When it was put backtogether a hose or 5 got crossed up somewhere along the way... we have a 93 FSM an 85 FSM as well as the Chiltons and a Haynes books... there is some conflicting hose diagrams for different years...  :_oops:

 UGH!!

ok.. hold my hand please and let's go thru the options a step (hose) at a time!

i'll hold your hand, or anything else of yours you want me to hold ;)

haha.... i am not 100% sure but all data may have what you are looking for.... when i looked up diagrams for the 84 cali 22r, all i could find was wiring for 83 and 85... its liek there never was a documented 84... someone using alldata, found it for me, and it was exactly what i was looking for... the chilton/haynes missed that diagram for some reason....

Here are the pics of my 89.  I don't know what part you're looking for specifically so I can get more if you need them.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I was on a wheeling trip over new years.  I pressure spayed all the mud off the truck but never did the engine.  Besides, it has 255,xxx miles.  I think it looks pretty good for never having been opened up before.

If I look hard enough I could probable still find some Japanese guys fingerprints on it from when it was first assembled.

Yeah, we need pictures of what isn't matching up.

The stuff I sent you is "probably" off an 86 CA model.

OK here we go!

We used the Lower Intake and put the "original Air-plenum" on top of it.

The 89 is slightly different in a couple of things... like the 88's are... :willynilly:
Anyone have an 88 EFI Cali smog... they can take pics of?

Please excuse the messy hoses... :lipsrsealed: but this will give you an Idea of what we're trying to put together.

Today at 01:12:16 PM Prismo – Did you figure out the problems with the 4runner?

Yes!!

It's officially a morph of at least 2 years of EFI stuff… AND it turns out that a sensor on the front of the manifold had been broken!
It was the one next to the 'cold start injector' and it had snapped at the “plastic plug in part” It was running like dog doo till it warmed up!

Tim replaced it and taa daa!! Starts up and puuuurrrs like a kitten!  :burnout: it was like 'instant gratification' too!!

Matthew (werty) had given us the electric schematics for the various years off the vatozone site… and the check engine light was giving the code “4 bips" and we had a good talk with the Toyota guru here in town "Nate"  who gave us another 'thermo sensor' off a manifold he had laying there!!
Screwed it in - plugged it in – Lil Blue started right up with zero ‘check engine light’  :driving: runs better than it has in a couple of years!

I guess it had been hanging by a thread till Tim changed the intake this last go round, looking at it  :_oops: it’s gimped up pretty good!

Thanks everybody!

Sweet!
RIP KYOTA
