fj80 electric locker
« on: Jan 06, 2008, 08:42:25 PM »
hi everybody, i am picking up a fj80 front axle this weekend i got as partial payment for some work. i cant afford to buy the cromo longs for it right now cause i just bought a set for my mini truck axle. so until i can afford it, i want to put the third member in the mini axle.
ok here is the question, when putting a fj80 third with the electric locker in a mini front axle do you have to get different inner axles or will i be able to use the ones i already have?

I'm pretty shure you can use the axles you have. The side gears are all 30 spline for mini truck, and fj80.

i thought they would but i was looking at longfields site and seen he had some some long spline inner axles for cable and electric lockers. just making sure they would still work.

The front FJ80 locker doesn't need a longer shaft, because it's the later style, 8" ring size, in which the locking ring locks the planetary gear to the diff case rather than the shaft to the diff case.

IIRC, I'm pretty sure you have to clearance the opening in your housing to accomodate the elocker out of an 80.  I know you do if you retrofit an 80 elocker in to a non elocker 80 axle.  You have to cut a notch into the opening on the housing.

Your stock axles will work and yes, you will have to mod the housing for the third. As far as the chromos for the 80, I wouldn't worry about that as much as what you are going to do about the steering arms. There are some options out there but so far none of them have looked beefy enough to me. The birfs are huge.

i am not using the 80 housing, actually traded it off for some other parts i needed. i kept the HP third as that is really all i wanted anyway.
