Spool install
« on: Nov 27, 2004, 02:40:04 PM »
What labor is required when installing a spool into a third, I have an open third with 5.29s I want to install a spool and put it in the rear and put my detriot up front. Can I get away with just popping the carrier out and replacing it with the spool or do I have to shim anything?  :twocents:   :turtle:

unless you have a hipinion or something, just pull your 3rd with detroit and install in fron, put the spool in the open one,   just set it up like you would when installing a new carrier or locker :bud:

That's what I'm wondering about, what deos it take to put in the spool, do I have to completely reset the third after I pull the carrier or can  I just pop it out and throw in the spool I've pulled the 3rds from the axles before that's not the prob, just the labor involved with installing the spool if I have to set it up all over agian I may just weld it or have it done if it;s not to expensive  :dunno:

is it a full spool, or a mini spool that replaces the spiders??

full yes you have to put the ring gear off your carrier onto the spool and then install it

mini - just pull the 3rd drop the spiders and reinstall

It would be a full spool as noone ,akes a mini for 30 spline Toyotas (hint, hint, hint).  New bearings and races and swap the ring gear to the spool.  Reset your backlash using a dial indicator and adjust accordingly with the adjusters on the sides.  I think it's .008 to .012??

Bearings are pretty cheap.  If you are going to weld it, just pull the third out, cover the bearings with duct tape and weld away.  Remove tape, clean it up and reinstall.  Save your money on bearings if they look OK.  I personally have never seen a bad carrier bearing unless it sat exposed in the rain and rusted up.   :twocents:

i could be wrong but wouldnt a minispool for a 10 bolt chevy drop right in,  both have 30 spline 1.30 inch axles  and the s10 had a 7.5" ringgear 10bolt

but i could be wrong,  never tried it but the numbers look really good

I don't know this will be my first time with setting up a third, I talked to a mechanic recommended to me by a buddy and he said the spool should drop right in an that I should just check the back lash, and shimm it if ness. so I'm giving it a shot and he said he'd check it for me sweet  :beerchug:

10 bolt spool??  Now you're talking.  I'll have to look into that.  I absolutely cannot believe someone hasn't made a 30 spline 8 inch Toyota mini spool.  They are so freakin cheap to make!!!  Come on Marlin-get busy!!!

That would be easier as I wouldn't have to remove and mount the ring gear

even if you had to use a 8.8 inch 10bolt mini spool, they still use 30 spline,  1.30 shaft,  you could just have your local machine shop turn the outside down till it would fit in the carrier

Damn Foot Hill offroad wasn't to into it, they said the splines are the same but didn't have a spool to test, the mini for the ten bolt would need to be machined I think it's on us to find out. I think my buddy has a ten bolt os when I pull my spool I'll fit the splines and find out if thats the same. But I think the carrier width is diff and the ten bolt has c clips do you think the spline run deep enough into the spool?

Spool install = easy
1 Remove third member
2 Mark bearing caps then remove caps and diff
3  Remove ring gear bolts, then ring gear
4 Press bearings off diff and onto spool
5 Install ring gear to spool, then bolts and torque
6 Intall spool into third, install spanners and caps, lightly torque
7 Set back lash,(.008 to .010), preload,  torque cap bolts, install spanner retainers w/ locktite
8 Install third.
Tool needed - press( borrow a buddies), dial indicator and stand (about $30 from Harbor Tools), stanard tools.
