removing decals
« on: May 06, 2004, 07:09:02 PM »
I'vr been having a hell of a time trying to get the big stripe decals off the sides of my 89 4runner. Is there a prefered method or solvent to dissolve them without completely ruining the paint?

Have you tried using a hair dryer? a little heat might help once you get an edge started. Lighter fluid works good on stickers too, dont know what it will do to your paint though.

when i worked in a detail shop we used to get an edge started and then use rubbing alcohol on the back and pull gentaly and it will come right off that is if it doesnt break appart. if it does use a heat gun but dont get to close because it might bubble the paint

You could always go to a paint supply store and get whats called an eraser, it is basically a regular eraser that you put in a high speed air tool.  I used them all the time to do just that, take off factory stickers.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Just be careful to only use the big eraser with a power drill. We were removing decals with a high speed air grinder when the eraser flew apart and broke Rockys [my mechanic's] nose.

The eraser works great and did not damage the paint. It is made by 3M.

Belt sander with 40 grit ! just go nice and easy and you should be fine, if you see paint or shiny metal you know you've gone too far.
