2RZ VS 3RZ Questions!!! HELP
« on: Aug 21, 2007, 09:38:05 PM »
I just found a 2RZ out of a 2003 4-runner 2wd for $200 and was wondering what the benefits the 3rz has over the 2rz. I've looked at the 3rz, but alot of the junk yards around here want about $1600 with everything I need for the swap. The 2rz I found is only the engine, but for $200 idk if I should pass it up. The main thing I'm wondering is if there are any major differences in the 2 engines. Thanks!

Also forgot to add that the engine has 63,000 miles on it.

From this post:

You get these #'s
22R   2   2366   96@4800   129@2800   3.62"   3.5   9.0:1
22R-E   2   2366   112@4600   142@3400   92   89   9.0:1
22R-TE   2   2366   135@4800   173@2800   3.62"   3.5"   7.5:1 - Boost: 6 psi

2RZ-FE   4   2.4l   142@5000   160@4000         9.5:1
3RZ-FE   4   2693   150@4800   177@4000   95   95   9.5:1
2TR-FE   4   2693   165@4800   183@4000   95   95   9.5:1 with VVTi (2005+)

The 3rz is the kick ass 4 cylinder, but from what I see the 2rz would work just fine, especially if your used to the 22r/e power range!  I'd be happy with the 2rz power and torque output.  They use the same bell housings!

i think i remember BigMike saying that it wouldnt pass smog because its a 2wd motor since its going in a 4wd.

I wasn't aware that you could get the 4 cylinder 2RZ in the 2003+ 4th Gen 4Runners. I thought that you could only get the 4.0 V6 and 4.7 V8. Are you sure it's a 2003?

Aaronb is right, but I can only speak for the smog laws in California.

You must keep the same chassis designations. An engine from a 2WD truck can not be legally transfered into a 4WD truck chassis.

Please take this story as just 1 experience I had. This is a word-of-mouth story, but hopefully it will give you a better idea of the two.

I do not have any personal experience with the 2RZ. A customer of ours did a 2RZ conversion shortly after I had done my 3RZ conversion, and he was asking me what I can pull the grade up Hwy168 at, and with similar setups, 35" tires + 5.29 and W56 5spds, I pulled that grade at 81 MPH in 5th gear with the throttle totally pegged. He was like "WHAT?! I HAVE TO USE 3RD GEAR!"

This comparison seems pretty extreme, so let me clarify some points first. The 3RZ has a strong power band that starts at or around 3,100 RPM. So if I can keep 5th gear above 3,100~ish RPM, then I can pull this grade in 5th gear. But if I let off just slightly, then I have to pull 4th gear, which the 3RZ can do in its sleep.

Knowing that 4th gear is not a challenge for the 3RZ, I asked him how his 2RZ can pull it in 4th gear, and he said not well at all: It won't hold a constant RPM.

So the additional 8 HP and 17 ft-lbs TQ makes a huge difference. :twocents:

I would LOVE to cruise alongside a 2RZ truck similar to mine and do some speed pulls to see how fast I can walk away from a 2RZ.

Thanks for the replies guys. So do you think that if I add a few mods to it once I got it running good it would make up for the power difference between the 3rz and 2rz. I was thinking a header, larger exhaust with a free flow cat, a similar intake set-up to big mikes original, and possibly down that road a turbo. The turbo wouldn't be for a while, so the initial mods would be the others.

Also I dont have to worry about smog laws in Wisconsin so that isn't a problem for me.

I'm just going by what I was told. Is there a way to find out what it is out of by the numbers on the block?

Wanna try that against a 1kzt?

But you will have to keep it in 4th gear to make it fair.  :smack:

One good thing is that I've heard the 2RZ's have a better top end than the 3RZs. Most of the professional drag racing Celica's use 1,000 HP+ 2RZ engines.

Alright thanks for the reply!

I have a email into one of the major salvage yards around here for a 3rz. The guy said that he has one, but is going to get some pics for me to look at first. I'm kind of nervous about the yard taking out the wiring harness.
