there's no way to test a junkyard transmission? even with the shifters? obviously it won't be a very comprehensive test but anything i can do (short of opening it up) to figure out if it's good or not. thanks

Ok try and wiggle the input shaft, both up/down, side to side and in and out.  Put the suspect trans in each gear and turn the input shaft 4-5 revolutions to be sure you have made at least one full revolution in each gear.  Pull the drainplug, look for shavings or metal chunks.  A little bit of metal flake is alright and is normal, but a lot is a bad sign.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

thanks!

i'll give it a go. i've already tried the shifting part but i never thought to ask the guy to drain it. hopefully he'll be ok with it. or did you mean lean it over pull the plug and then put it back on before the oil can come out?
