Topic: Need some ideas for a windshield frame.

I ordered some glass today to make a windshield for the buggy. Gettin tired of the cheap lexan scrathing so easily. Any hoo, I need to make a frame that I can bolt to the front of the cage so I can take it off while wheelin.   I want to use a rubber gasket since glass and metal don't get along. I was thinking of angle iron with some tabs weled on to hold the glass in but I think that might look like crap. Some c- chanel of some sort would be nice . I could biuld the frame around it and weld it together but not sure if the raubber will be able to take the heat. I don't care about water tight so that might be ok. Anyone here ever build a frame? Or have any ideas?

  could you cut the windsheild frame off a donor truck, and mabye put some c-channel on the back of the vertical parts, so the channel slides over your cage tubes?  Then throw some bolts on it to keep it there?

No, the glass I ordered is flat and is the shape of the "windshield frame" of my cage.  I did actually think of doing that idea, but in the end I decided on this.

could you use some strap and make a frame that would sandwich the glass with a gasket? make two frames that are the same. one front one back, line the glass in weather striping or what ever  type of gasket you wana use.

Go to the JC Whitney web site and find windshield gaskets like what would be use on an older Chevy pickup. It is like an (H) And the glass goes in one side of the H and the angle or tab goes into the other. There is an insert to close it up, make sure you get that too.

I use the tubing that the cage was made of and welded a 1/4" x 1" flat bar around the inside to make the flange. Then made a cadboard template to fit in the gasket. Took that to a glass shop and had them cut laminated safety glass to that shape.

Them are some good ideas.    I found some stuff on Jeg's for the weather stripping. I'm leaving thurs for Tahoe so it will have to wait til next week.   Thanks for the ideas.

Willy has the right idea.  I put one in like that a couple years ago and it worked great. 

Don't forget to keep your template for repalcement glass.  (Don't ask how I know)
