New guy in Phoenix
« on: May 05, 2006, 06:03:48 AM »
My name is Tim and I just bought a non-running 1981 toyota sb.  It's a heap, but it is so cool to me. You should of seen my brother's face when it got loaded on the wrecker.  It is so new I called it an 1980 in the Part wanted section as I am looking for 2.7 3rzfe to replace 22r.

My other sickness - 1970 EFI Bronco & 1988 FJ62

Here's what I know about the truck:
engine - it blew a head gasket which prior owner says was replaced.  It has sat 5+ years.
trans - supposed to be a five speed but I cant find 5th gear in pattern
Body - needs work also.
Frame - only surfaced rust on frame.

Plans:

Strip it down to frame to clean, paint and re-build axles.
Locate buy 2.7 3rzfe
Locate buy w56 +tcase (I have a quote from local junk yard for $500 for both)
Locate w59 bell housing
Install engine, trans, and t-case in frame
Put body and back on, fix or replace body and then paint

questions:
Which w56? (a or b) or does it matter as long as you get correct t-case
Both of these are 21 inches(marlin doc) from bell housing to shifter, how much longer is this then what currently in there assuming stock 5speed.  How far does the cross member move?

Anybody want a sun-bleached camper shell?  BTW - It goes on the curb on monday(5/8) to help our amnesty population.  Let me know if you are interested as I will hold on to it.

btw  look at the metal tag on the inside of the passenger side fender or behind the engine on the firewall,  it will tell you what the tranny is, 1980-83  will be a L43,45, 4 speed or L50-52  5 speed

Thanks, mystery solved L45.  Does part of the code reveal color.  It currently faded red and surface rust brown with stripe deals on hood(either side) and down sides.
