rocker arm clatter ?
« on: May 15, 2004, 01:25:33 PM »
Hey guys nice forum you have, especially since its about yotas. I just finished rebuilding my w56 tranny, and figured I would adjust the rocker arms since I was doing stuff. They clatter like crasy. However after adjusting them, they still clatter :smack: What caused this clatter under the valve cover? I heard alot of people say they all do it. But surely they dont come from the factory making that noise, so something has to be worn out.

Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks

warm?

i always adjust mine cold.  0.008" intake and 0.012" exhaust.

as for the clatter.  if you over tighten your valve cover it will pull the rocker assembley up , loosening the rockers causeing them to clatter.

also you may want to pull the cover and check to make sure none of your adjusted lock nuts didn't come loose.

it is normal for them to make a little noise though.  if you adjusted them right then don't worry about it.

Yeah I did it warm like the FSM said. I was for sure I had a real loose rocker. It sounds just like loose lifter in a 350 or something.it come from the back cylinder area. the timing chain had some slack on one side while I was rotating the crack to line up on 0 degres. I dunno now, but I think its definitly more than normal.

Thanks guys

You may have a bad valve. Compression check it using the FSM as a guide.

Cold, adjust to .006 intake, .010 exhaust.
Hot, adjust to .008 intake, .010 exhaust.

You may also have worn rocker arm adjusting studs, and/or the end of the valve stem may have wear from excessive valve clearance.

Check to make sure that the rocker arms are centered on the exhaust valve stems of the #2, and #3 cylinders. I have seen the arms wear on the side and run off center.
