Re sealing oil pan questions
« on: May 30, 2007, 01:31:01 PM »
I need to reseal the oil pan on my 85 SAF. I don't have a bad leak yet, but I see some wetness.

Should I use an oil pan gasket or can I just use Ultra gray RTV? I despise cork gaskets does anyone make a paper one

It looks like the oil pan should fall straight down or so I hope. Am I going to have to lift the motor or remove the pickup?

Just drop the pan. Theres nothing tricky you have to do to get it out, its nice. I would just get a new gasket. And as far as I know you can only get quark gaskets for these motors. I tried getting one of those blue rubber ones from Fel-Pro but they don't offer it. Of course I have a 20R and that could be why.

But quark gaskets arent all that bad if you know how to properly install them.

very true, i just did the oil pan in the 85, easy as pie, just clean it up very well and use alittle bit of silicon on the pan side to fill in the little divit.... tighten it evenly and DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!!! just snug it up till it puffs out the side a little bit.... then you shouldnt have any worries!

I did the same way, some RTV on the pan side of the gasket. And I tightened it until the quark puffed out at the edge a little, but I had to go about another half turn to get it to fully seal. Could be my pan though, it was a bit funky on the flange.

yeah, as for the flange i went around in between the bolts on the pan and tapped it up with a hammer to seal up the edges alittle better and the front  corners wouldnt seal without me doing that...... needless to say it doesnt leak!!!! hey, maybe marlin should come out with a line of rubber oil pan gaskets for the 20r 22r and 22re??????? i know i would buy them!!!

:dunno: I just used some high temp RTV on mine.  Hasn't leaked yet, and that was almost 2 years ago.  No wetness either.

Get yourself a piece of roofing rubber and draw/ cut out a custom gasket. Anyplace that sells rubber roofing material will probably give you a big enough piece for free if you tell them what you want it for.

I finished the job an hour ago, and I was not surprised that I found a piece of a timing chain guide in the oil pan. It was about 1/2 inch long. The truck is quite and does not rattle, never has rattled. I assume it's in the mail.
