mating 22re too tranny (newbie content)
« on: May 13, 2007, 07:02:32 PM »
im trying to mate the motor to the tranny and having a hell of a time trying to get it in.

the tranny is already mounted so im trying to get the motor in.

my problem is getting the motor fully flushed with the bell housing. the top is flush with it but i can get the bottom to get flush with the tranny.

another question it would not have gone in this far if the tranny shaft isnt mated with the motor right?

are you using a  clutch tool  to make sure its alignned right??

put a jack under the front of the tranny and  that should make the difference

yup, used a clutch aliment tool....

i guess should it be pretty easy if the output shaft is mated with the motor?

OH,, yes  if  the  input shaft is aligned  it  should pop right in,  sometimes  you gotta  rotate the engine  back and forth  to get the splines  in the clutch to lign up  but thats all

again  jack up the front of the tranny  so  the top  of the bell housing is  close  to the firewall

ive given up for the day....once one side is flush the other side has a big gap.....argh.    :help:

oh yeah im also kind of scared that the transmission input shaft might have hit the pressure plate and push the pressure "teeth" in ....would that be a valid concern if im having such hard time getting the thing to line up ?

You need to keep the gaps the same. Get the engine out enough to put the alingment tool & check to make sure it's straight. You will need to jack the transmission up a little. Take your time & slide the engine on the input shaft until the engine stops. Rotate the crank shaft & push the engine back to the trans until the splines get started. The hard part is lining up the input shaft with the pilot bearing. So you need to keep the top, bottom, left & right gaps the same  :crossed: :twocents:

I know it sounds stoopid, but dont forget to check the dowels. I have seen when mating a motor and tranny from two different donors, sometimes the dowels will end up on the same side when you go to stick it together.

instead of helicoiling, i got a drill bit and slightly reamed out the hole. then put in a stud from napa st-39 and tapped it in... its 3/8 thread on one side and 7/16 on the other... the 3/8" side clears the 10 mm holes on the gasket and the manifold..

i had heard mixed reviews on helicoil systems.....

just an fyi, all my header bots were stripped! so all of them were replaced! with the st-39
