84 22RE in a 92??
« on: Feb 26, 2007, 06:14:36 PM »
Anyone know if an 84 22RE will work in a 92 EFI PU?  I know the diferences in the blocks and heads, tall vs short block, flat vs dome pistons, ect...  As far as I can tell the blocks have minor differences on the exterior, but all the sensors, ect seem to be there.  And the both EFI intakes look the same.  So from what I can tell it should work.  Oh, and the 84 EFI that I have is an import engine from japan...  It is a factory EFI motor...  So it's complete, matching block, head and EFI intake...

I just wanted to make sure it would work before I put it in there...  Anyone know the difference in Horsepower and torque between the 84 EFI and the 92 EFI?

I think the only issue might be the knock sensor, like we discussed, but there are ways around that. That motor isn't gonna be a power house unless ya call LC engineering, but efi makes it a worth while swap.`

Yeah, I checked both blocks, sitting side by side...  It looks like both have the same sensors, ect on them...  Which one is the knock sensor?

i could have sworn that 85 was the first year for the 22RE but maybe since its imported they must have started production earlier, the plugs for some sensors might all need to be swapped because they are a little bit different, even from 89 to 92 i had to swap over the TPS, Knock and oil sensors! just three of them but it may be a few more with the 84....  have fun with the swap!!

The only problem I see is; They didn't put 22RE's in until 1985 when it was an option.

I guess what I'm asking isn't if it will work...  I mean, I could make almost any motor work in there, and not if they made an early 22RE because I have one sitting right here.  lol  It could very well be out of a cellica...  And I know that the blocks and heads are slightly different because of the different pistons, ie. shorter block with taller head, taller block with shorter head...  But more specifically, if there is any difference in horsepower or torque between the early EFI, with the dome style pistons and the newer EFI with the flat top type pistons...

Yeah, the later 22RE had a little more power than the earlier ones, just modern development crud!!

I finally got my answer.  Yes, it will work.  The 84 just makes less horsepower than the 92...  So, I'm going to just try to sell the 84 that I have and have my 92 rebuilt.  So if anyone needs an 84 with 30,000 miles on it and a newly rebuilt head, I posted it in the FOR SALE section...
