Flywheel/Clutch ? Attn: Marlin/Bigmike/anybody!!
« on: Mar 28, 2007, 01:52:05 PM »
Remember, that I'm taking out a 22rte and putting in a 22re!

I've heard about the turbo's having a heavier clutch/flywheel!  Will it work with the 22re with no problems?   I know the block to bellhousing is still the same, so what's the difference?  I see that the turbo clutch is slightly larger.  But you sell a flywheel that seems to be universal, is this true?  I plan on putting a new clutch in at the same time!  And I just want to be 100% on everything.

I hope ya'll understand, and thank you for your time!

I don't know if the RTE has a heavier flywheel than the RE, but assuming it does you should still have no troubles. A heavier fly wheel can even help to prevent bogging the motor at lower rpm's and smooth vibrations from a 4cyl.

The larger clutch = more surface enguagment = less feathering. In the case of clutches though, bigger or ceramic is not always better.

Hope it helps some.

Thanks!  I was figuring it would work.  The biggest thing is there is no reference for me to go by on what is usable and what isn't.  So, I'm getting alot of vague answers.  That's why Mike and Marlin's name are in the title, so they can give me the definite answer.  The only people that have done this had it done at a shop, so they have no idea on what was used and wasn't.  I've got a line on the complete intake and ecm for a 87-86 p/u and just need the motor basically!  I just need to get my arse in gear!

Yeah no ceramic clutch for me!  They only really work for semi's, since they don't use the clutch to shift!

the turbo clutch is larger, in 93 Toyota went back to it in all 22r 4wd p/ups. USE IT you will be happy. the heavier flywheel helps with more bottom end torque. more rotating mass. better use of low rpm.
