87 radiator core and wires?
« on: Mar 15, 2004, 10:06:53 PM »
Anyone know what wires are in the radiator core? I plan to cut it out in a few days, so I will need to re wire it. I am hoping its just the headlights and turn signals.

Oh Yea, t's my 87 4runner. :smack:

I was thinking I while I had the coe apart I would upgrade the headlights to run off a relay directly off the battery.  for a true 14V and brighter lights.

Also want to get the wires out f there, so every time I decide to work on it there not in the way. I am making the radiator support removable.  Reason for this is you can't take the engie out without removing the trans. (7MGE) I am hoping that once I cut the core out it will clear the frame and pull out while leaving the trans in place.

More work now = less work later.

Ok I got it aprat today, here is what I found.

there are about 5 wires in the loom across the core support for the charging system. There is also some wires for my supra swap, and the headlight wires from Pass to drivers side. I plan just to leave the headlight wires since they unplug easy.

I got them apart and I think I can get them across the firewall without much problem. I just need to remover the drivers fender. Unplus on of the plugs and separate 3 wires from that loom. Drill and gromet a new home from the fender to near the clutch master. Then the wires should make it back togeter without a splice. I will keep you posted if anyone cares.

I cut out the lower support, but still have the upper in place. I may be able to fit my new radiator under it.

I decided to rebuilt the frame front crossmember. Mine was hevily bent, and twisted. QWhen I took the bumper brackets off I found a few cracks in the steel and wel on the crossmember.

The new Radiator barely fits between the upper stock support, and frame. My plan it to make the new crossmember 1/2"lower to have some rubber to sit the radiator on. Ten rebuild the lower core support around the radiator. and may have more rubber there. Mybe some type of clamp. Then the radiator will bolt directly to the top core support, and the rest will float a bit under flex to keep it from tearing it apart the radiator.

Anyone know how much float I should have? I know depends on the truck.

Looks good!  I had forgotten you were 7 m powered.  I like how you did the lower part of the core support, I was trying to think of the cleanest method of doing that and I think I just saw it!  Thanx for the killer ideas.

there is one plate welded to the body mount, and the other is welded to the rod. Then they bolt together. I wanted 2 bolts in each side so it didn't twist as easy.
It all comes apart so I can pull the engine without taking the trans out. I need that room since the 7M is so long.

Now I got to find a slim AC condensor to fit in there.

OK I got it running today. I got 3" from the radiator to the pullys. with the stock 7M radiator I had in there I only had 1/2"

My question is.

I need to make a shroud and use electric puller fans. How much space do I need to have inside the shroud? (between the radiator and the inside of the shroud) Plan to just make a box, and bolt the fan/fans to it where the motor wont get hit by a belt or pully.

Here are some of the latest pics.

New hole to reroute the wires.

New Engine in the truck.
If you look close you can see the loom from the fuse box to the firewall and across. I am still leaving the bat and headlight wires across the core. Since I will take the bat out is I am tearing the front off. And the headlight is any easy plug to get to. The other wires went in without splicing since I drilled the hole.

junk AC compressor , checking for space.

16 days till i leave for Moab. And I still need to replace the front springs, adn figure out how to mount the bumper. I also need to get the AC running, but that won't keep me from going. Just make me more comfortable.

Rebuilt the pass spring pack, debating on the driver side. Used some factory rear leaves cut to fit in the downey main leaf.

going to pick up some 35" MTR now. Decided to drop the size from 36 swamper for better road manners.

I may try and go thru E Check tomorrow. I hope I got enough miles on the engine to burn the junk off the gaskets and they don't notice no Cat. :crossed:

I took a few pics of the engine while I was at Frydaddy's. While I was there I also took pics of his rig we are starting to call the Canoe. And Kenny's 5MGE swap.

I posted them here
