front axle shims question
« on: Feb 20, 2007, 08:26:56 PM »
Would the front axle benifit from the addition of some shims on the spring perches to help with the driveline angle, or would that negatively affect steering or something worse?

yea  you dont want that how much lift do you have??

if  your front shaft is the problem  get the  flange from a later  model  driveshaft  and put on it

I've put 2 deg shim in and can not tell any negative effects.  I recommend only using steel shims and weld them to the perches.

If you require more than 2 degrees, do what Glenn suggests 1st.

If you are having driveline angle problems then re-setting your pinion angle is very helpful. The best way to do it is to either weld shims in like All Set suggested or cut and re-weld the stock perches. Then cut and rotate your knuckles to bring your caster back into spec. Sounds like a lot of work, but it's really not that bad.

I have 7" lift springs...  The shaft has 3 u-joints.  It seems like if the angle was better I wouldn't have to replace the joins so much.

I probably have some newer flanges.  Which part do you swap out?  The transfer case side or the diff side?  The flange is the very end that is attached to the u-joint, right?  How are the newer ones different?

I saw them do a pinion angle reset on an FJ on that Extreme 4x4 show.  It wouldn't be too hard, if I had their shop and tools...  I think I'll do that as a last resort.
