which engine for the crawler
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 10:48:19 PM »
if i dont use the rotary engine, its gonna be up for sale along with the rest of the car, its an 86 rx7 and it even has an intercooler, but i think the rotary doesnt make enough torque, and my truck might be too heavy, what do u guys think?

rotaries are cool and lightweight, but not very practical for crawling.

the 13b si really cool but it isn't a torquey motor at all.  I would stick to the 22re if you aren't going to smaller motor.

Yea the 13b isn't a crawler type motor. Now if you were going to be flying across dunes then it would be sweet. High horsepower with little torque not too mention the 9 grand or so redline

22re is tried and true, a couple mods to get alittle more HP and you are good to go.

Trucks too heavy for a 13b... crawling's about low down torque, not top end horsepower.  Buy a beater vw and throw the 13b in the back. The 22re has (for its size) quite a bit of grunt at low rpms and is far less likely to leave you stranded on the trail or anywhere for that matter. Yes the 13b's can go a long time, but when raped they need rebuilds somewhat frequently. Rape the 22re all day long, it'll beg for more.  :twocents:

Somewhat offtopic, but when did people forget that rotary engines only perform well in very light cars? Apparently mazda forgot, since the new rx8 in ass heavy for a rotary. Yeah yeah yeah, it's lighter than all the competition, but it's still not light enough. And where's this new rx7 I've been hearing about for years?  :dunno:
