(PICS) Oil Pressure Switch Help
« on: Jan 11, 2007, 03:44:07 PM »
1985 4Runner (manufactured in May)

My oil pressure gauge does not operate and I am trying to track down the problem. I ran through the FSM diagnostics for the actual gauge on the dash and it works so I went to replace the oil pressure sending unit and there in lies my issue.

Here is what is on the vehicle currently:
Notice the wire coming out of the unit it self

Its connection

Here is the Unit that is supposed to be the factory replacement unit but as you can see there is no wire and it has the male button type connection

What are your thoughts and suggestions?

take the old sending unit out of the block and remove the rubber boot, should have the connection on it . If not you can make one with the proper size female wire connector, just make sure it slips on sending unit connection tightly then slip the boot back on.

When I switched senders on my 88 (for an SR5 cluster swap), the old sender also had a blade connector. The new one had the round connector like in your pic. I found that the old connector, had a slot in the side of it, so it could just be slid over the round head of the new sender. So the connector is now at a 90° angle compared to how it was on the old sender.
I'll see if I can snap a pic tomorrow, if you want.

OK...Heres pics: (Sorry about the blurriness...damn camera was acting up...)

Pull the boot off and this is what you'll see

The end of the connector in the boot. You can see it will slide over the blade connector on the regular idiot light sender.

Also this, the side of the same connector:

It has a slot in one side.

The the round disc and pin slide down inside the connector, 90° to what you would expect.

hard to tell in this pic, but the connector "lays flat" across the top of the sending unit, parallel to the engine block.

It will look and feel odd, like it wont stay on, but it will. The boot will help keep it secured.

Toyota usually has a mentality of using common parts across models, to keep things simple and inexpensive.
Kinda odd, how they designed this one connector to be used on two different connections, yet its on a pigtail. Meaning basically, there is the extra connector 6 inches upstream away from the sender. just kinda odd...but I guess there is probably a good reason why they did it.
