Identifying a r151f trans.
« on: Dec 05, 2006, 11:43:25 AM »
After spending an entire afternoon in a junkyard in hopes of this trans actually being a r151f,to my dismay found the input shaft only had 21 splines and the case looked identical to my w56 trans thats going bad. Whats another good way of identifying a r151f turbo trans? Any help would greatly be appreciated, they are trying to find me another one.  Mike :turtle:

nine bolts hold on the bellhousing instead of the usual 6.

A quick look at the id tag in the door jam or engine bay will tell you, but I guess that only applies if it's still in the vehicle.

The most obvious and definate dead-give-away of the 1986-87 Turbo R151F 5-spd transmission is the service hole at the bottom center of the bellhousing.

I don't have any pictures of it handy, but it is about a 2" hole right in the bottom center of the bellhousing. I believe this service port is used to inspect the clutch disk.

the  ribs  along the side  and along the bell are bigger,  and there is a round hole  with a rubber plug in the bottom of the bellhousing

You might want to go check that one again...
The R151 DOES have a 21 spline input...its the OUTPUT that is only 23 spline.

I dont know if all the r151's have it, but I have 2 of them that have what I think is the tranny series to motor series cast into the flange of the bellhousing. It is "R x 22R"...I also have a 7MG/GTE to R154 bell that has the same type of thing. Its has "R x M".
i dont know if the W and G or any other trannys have this.

Heres the casting on the R151 bell:

And the bell mating surface:

Heres the 7M bell:

Can anyone else confirm their bells have the "code" cast into it?
Again, I have no proof that this casting "code" IS for the tanny series to motor series, just supposing it based on these two bells...

thanks for the info and pics. Ive been thinking the input is 23 splines and thats why the clutch is different for the r series trans. The bellhousing from the one in the boneyard didnt have that hole in the bellhousing so im sure it was another w56 trans like the one in my truck now. thanks again for the info. mike

Hey picked up my turbo trans and yes this one is correct thanks to all your help on the forum. Now I get to blow up my w56 with no worries. I must say the w56 with 230k on it and a few tow jobs with the stock 410s in the diffs.
