Marlins 3rz intake...
« on: Oct 27, 2006, 03:06:47 AM »
I've noticed Marlin and Dean (??) both seem to run a home jobby intake for the 3rz, I was wondering if maybe we could get more info? Or if it's a brand, which brand? I was thinking of making a home made intake and have some ideas but just want to know if it's already been done.

Go to the 3RZ database post, it will be at the top.  It shows how Bigmike, Marlin, Dean's, and Bevin's intakes are all setup.  If you look closely, Bevin's is the only one that looks factory.  Marlin's and Dean's have just been shortened and have a aftermarket air filter on them.  I just looked at some pics of Dean's that I haven't put on computer yet, and it looks like he just shortened the factory intake plastics.  Bigmike looks like he made his so he can try to get cooler air!  You'll have to get the official word from Bigmike though!!  Since he worked on all of them!

All it is is a cone filter adapter attached to the AFM housing, then a simple cone filter is attached to the inlet of the cone filter adapter.

Marlin and Dean both kept their sound deadening box, whereas I removed my sound deadening box by cutting the intake pipe right behind the box, and that is where I have attached my AFM.

In addition to Marlin, Dean, and I, Bevin has also gone this route with a direct intake with a cone filter.

Here is my setup without the sound deadening box:

Here is Marlin's with the sound deadening box:

Not as noisy as I would like, if that answers your question. :gap:

Yes: Pepboys, Kragens, Autozone, Napa, Decker, Summit Racing, Local speed shops, etc.

Anywhere from $6 to $10 is a good price for the adapter.

is it just called the 3rz mas adapter? I'm kinda wondering what to tell the parts guy what it is exactly I'm looking for.

I believe it is a pretty standard bolt pattern, as when you read the labels on the many different intake cone adapters in the parts stores, it might say something along the lines of "this unit will work on 95-2006 Toyotas, 93-97 Nissan, 89-94 Mazada, 99-2005 Honda" or something like that.

I think its just a matter of selecting the correct one that lists your application. If anything take a piece of cardboard and trace out the bolt pattern. Take that along with some measurements made right a ruler and you should be able to find the one that fits the 3RZ

My adapter is actually from a Nissan 300ZX that happened to fit. But Bevin's adapter specifically said something like "95-2005 Toyota, ......etc" and it worked just fine.

If you are a cheap skate like me here is what I did
http://stores.channeladvisor.com/hiprospeed-performance-auto-parts-accessories/Items/AFA-004M?sck=9447059
for the filter and adapter. I used carriage bolts to mount the adapter to the MAF adapter to keep the maf housing to the stock intake I went to the home depot and went to there plumbing section and picked up a 3 1/2 silicone coupler mine came with a metal housing and straps.

cool guys, thanks.

I found the part today...first store I went to was like "WTF, you want a cold air intake!?" so I explained again, and got another staff guy who found it but couldn't info from there supplier...so I went to another shop...he missed it in the catalogue so I pointed it out...4 week wait most likely to ship it. In both stores it was made by RACTIVE...a ricer company.

Went to Lordco ( A parts chain in British Columbia) and they will have it here in two days for 20 bucks, made by a different company.

so all in all it looks like it will be a cheap intake mod, I just gotta figure out how far back I wanna take the stock stuff back now.

I think the green filters are by HKS they are better than k&n but you will pay unless your buddy hooks you up.

Oh man, just an update...

Went to parts store to pick out a filter...At the counter (no offence to women in general) was this chick who just looked haggard, and I've dealt with before, doesn't know jack. I tried to avoid her by looking towards the counters where guys were, but were also already serving customers, finally she asks if she can help. So I tell her I have to find a K&N filter with a 3" I/D flange. She gets the book, and can't actually read the catalogue...Instead I have to listen to her pregnant dog about how "they list this stupid :pokinit: so hard to read" finally she grabs aguy and he goes to a different section and gets at least into the filters with a 3" I/D and we put the order in, but the dimensions of the filter don't sound right...4.5" diameter, 5" long. I guessI have to wait till friday and see how it shows up...but I have a feeling I'm going to be denying it and having to order another.

oh bloody helll...

the filter fit fine, large enough...enough room where the airbox was...except the F@#$ing MAF adapter is the wrong one. I had everything apart (not that it was a big deal but it was -8 or  so) and had to put it all back tp stock cause the bolt holes don't line up and the baseplate didn't really seem cover the opening to the maf too good due to hole locations...

I am sorry to hear about your problem. How off is the baseplate? I would definitely complain to the company you bought it from, My buddy who had done this same mod, had the same problem as you do. He complained to Hi pro about what was wrong and he will not tell me what was said but the only thing he did tell me was it would be cheaper and easier for him to doctor up the adapter.

What he did was, JB welded the old holes then re-align the MAF housing and drilled the proper holes to fit the trucks MAF housing, he then re-used the old Gasket between the stock filter housing and the MAF Housing and used sensor safe gasket material for extra protection he sealed up the tube so well that it is now waterproof.
Best Of Luck to you.

thanks destruct- o

I had thought of that first off when we were outside in -10 at night trying to install it (The wonders of a new part and the need to install it, no matter the time of day :gap:)

I had marked where the proper holes were supposed to be on the plate, but it was sketchy, as the maf had some machining in the surface (which were probably of little concern but I was worried about a secure fitting) and then the old holes would expose more to a possible leaking. I'm kinda torn now...I can order a proper brand name one for a couple dollars more, but it's 4 weeks out on shipping, which, by now would have almost been here lol. Or I could wait and just build one when the temp warms up...I'll probably just suck it up and order the one thats 4 weeks out...at 20 bucks it seems better to pay the cash ten to make it by hand. I really want to see a 22re maf to see the fit and difference...
