egr leaks with headers
« on: Sep 24, 2006, 10:52:52 AM »
I have an 84 pickup with an 86 22re block(carbuerated)

installed Doug Thorley headers about a year ago, and with that came an egr leak through the gasket where my egr piping bolts to the headers (the bracket near  the front of the engine). I dealt with it this whole time and last weekend replaced my head gasket, and in doing so reinstalled the headers with fresh gaskets and all. I used some silicone gasket sealer for the egr to the header gaskets but not for the exhaust gaskets. Fired her up, and yet again, same egr leak. I don't think its affecting performance, but I can hear the engine firing quite a bit louder than I think I should be able to. While shes running, if I put my hand right over the leak you can just feel some hot air coming out, and visually there is mild carbon buildup on the gasket. Can I shove some silicone gasket maker in there in an attempt to clog it? and is this a regularily occuring problem with headers? Thanks for the help

I had a few issues with my thorly header leaking.  I installed a remflex gasket.  I had to drill a hole for the egr, but that was no big deal.  It did fix all the issues.
Here is the address
http://www.remflex.com/

It was around $32, definately worth the money.  I did put antisieze on both sides of the gasket, in case I have to take it off.

You could try copper based rtv first as a quick fix before the expensive gasket...or you could try the copper spray paint type stuff...they are both hi temp sealants.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I hope you have better luck with the copper than I did.  I tired it many times, it only lasted for a few miles.  Thats why I broke down and bought the gasket.  That fixed it.

I used the Copper spray and it seals great.  Plus it is high temp like said above.

I tried the copper rtv first and it seems to be working great. no exhaust sounds or leaks from there yet, so I think it did the trick. Thanks for the help
