G52 snap ring ???
« on: Jan 10, 2004, 10:45:25 AM »
My buddy bought a used G52 from a guy , not yet installed.
When he drained the gear oil, he noticed the end of a large
snap ring poking out of the drain hole.  He was able to wriggle
it out with a needle-nose.  Its about 3" in diameter.
Tranny seems to shift OK thru the gears while on the bench.

Any idea which part this could be ?
I can post a picture of it, if necessary.

Also, the input and output shafts have a little bit of play.
Is this typically the bearings ?  Need special tools to replace ?

TIA

Whiteboy, 3" is about 75 mm. This could be the center mainshaft bearing retainer clip   :unhappy: or a 3/4, or 5th gear hub syncrow daug spring clip.
Does it have bent ends, or it it a plain c-clip.
Please post a pitcure so I can be sure.
Lets hope it was left behind by mistake.

Well, I didn't get a chance to take a picture of it, but it is real thin, with slightly bent out ends on it.  (like you are supposed to compress it to install, allowing it to expand into a groove.)
Doesn't seem to show up in the exploded views of the G52 in
my FSM.   ???

I do not need a pic. This is a shift hub syncrow daug spring clip :yipes: not good!
It is most likely from the 3/4th hub.
Bad bearings, wasted syncrows, broken hub .....
Best to open it up and take a peek. Begin with the front collar.
Inspect the larger bearing. You will need bearing pullers and a shop manual to help you out. This is not a simple job :help:

Thanx for the reply Marlin.
Yeah doesn't look good.   This old tranny may not be worth
fixing.  I'll pass on the information to my buddy.  He won't be
too happy.
