60 is the best but a 44 built right will hold up very well

cromoly axles and ctm u-joints should do the trick in the 44 also easier to come buy
and cheaper to build :rockingout:

80's jeep wagoneer front dana 44's are the most poplular for the Taco SAS. They can be gotten for pretty cheap at any junk yard. Stay away from the vaccum assist axles. They can be identified by a goofy looking diff with a vaccum line going into it. Sorry no pics...

What about those old Chevy and GMC trucks, like the k2500s (early 70s to mid 80s).  There's lots of them in junkyards and they had dana 44s in the front I think and GM 12 bolt out back.  The 1 ton versions (k3500) had dana 60s up front I believe.  The dana 44/GM 12 bolt would probably be a pretty stout and cheap setup.  They're not the strongest axles out there, but under a light truck like a Tacoma they should be more than enough.  Maybe upgrade shafts and u joints like was already stated above.

unless your changing both your front and rear, you should look at fabbed axles and toy axles. i decided to go with a fabbed axle so i could get the perfect width.   another thing to consider is dana 44's and 60's will be 5 lug, so either you will have to run different wheels front and rear or convert the axle to 6 lug.
'99 SR5/TRD Tacoma w/5vzfe. SAS'd with 64" diamond axle (w/ long superset & ARB). about 5" of lift, 305/75 x16 BFG KM1's. Soon to come: 1.5" more lift (6.5"), 35 to 37" tire, undecided at this point., 63" F/F diamond rear, Marlin 4.7 tacobox.

some dana's are 8 lug also, like from a 3/4 ton chevy truck or something.  Diamond axles make some sweet stuff.

I am pretty sure wagoneers are 6 lug and driver side drop hence thier popularity, 6 lug vehicles are most import 4 wheel drives, chevies and jeep wagoneers
