CTENG,

I used to work for a guy that modded out his cargo van  for about 1K, avter paying I think 3K for it at auction.  It was 2 years old when he bought it, it was from the City of Sacramento yard, had something like 40k miles on it.  :dunno:
he made a box out of plywood, about 18" deep, that was just the right size for a twin mattress. He put a lid on it, and set the mattress on top of the lid, with a lip around it to keep it from sliding off.  He used the hydraulic risers from a minivan's rear hatch to lift the lid, and keep it up, and used the 40"x72"x18" (rough guess) as lockable storage underneath.  He also built shelves out of angle iron on one side, with the outside edge of the front peice angled up.  They were the exact width for milk crates, and the lip would hold them in.  He installed a high output alternator, and ran 2 batteries.  He had a dorm refrigerator running on an inverter off the batteries, and he could leave it overnight without running the vehicle and it would still start inthe morning.  I think he also had a microwave too, but about the time he got that, he moved.

If you're interested in pursuing this, I can draw some pics if this wasn't clear enough :dunno:

I miss my van, it was a Dodge class b had everything you need for dry camping it was a 1 ton with a hightop I could stand up in it. About the only mod that was needed for towing was a trans cooler and some firestone airbags for the rear to keep it level. It even had a crapper. I sold it to a friend and he's enjoying it even more. If you see it you can't miss it, it is Ice Cream truck white (looks like one too) and it will either be trailering a blue 4Runner or blue Toyota Truggy.

it doesn't seem like that would be too comfy for the long haul...

Here's my van before it got painted all white, so you could imagine it coming down the street singing that sweet ice cream truck song.

We have an 88 Ford Conversion van in the local craigslist for 1200 bucks.  It has the 302.  Anybody got any experience towing with a 5.0?

Anyone have any clue what transmission would be in that van?

CTENG,

My dad may be selling his van soon   1991 chevy conversion.  Rear folds down into a bed, TV, captains chairs, tow package.  We've towed with it before, but its been a while.

It is mechanically sound, been taking care off, passes CA smog.  Body is decent, paint could use some work.  I'll check on the other stuff

Well you could turn it into a road, um I mean offroad trip and drive out, wheel some in Cali then tow your truck back.
