questions about t-case gears!
« on: Jun 20, 2006, 11:27:18 PM »
Hello, Okay i have an 84 pick up with the 22r and the 5spd.. now i have 4.88s in the axels. and i need more crawl power! now, two questions, what trans do i have and what transfer case do i have?            now what would be better? and what would be cheaper?  dual cases?? or do those 4.70 gears and just leave one case? i dont really wanna do the two cases cause then i have to do driveshaft work, doing dual stock case would bring me around 4.30s? right... let me know... thanks guys!!!

I'm thinking it is cheaper in the long run to do 4.7 gears. No DS modifications needed, no crossmember needed, no spare t-case needed.

Dual cases would bring you to a t-case crawl ratio of (2.28x2.28) 5.198:1 when both are engaged.

just do the 4.7 gears in your single t-case.  Just did that to my truck and love it.  pretty easy install as well.

reasons for me doing this is:  -planning on lifting my truck in the spring, so i didn't want to have to modify DS twice if i went with duals
                                        - when i do go to duals when i lift it i will be modifying DS once, and when i do duals i will have an ultimate crawl set up 223:1 crawl ratio

that is my reasoning for only doing 4.7s in single case right now.  right now i have  a crawl ratio of 72:1, if you were to just do single 4.7s you would have a crawl ratio of 89:1.  reason being you have 4.88 gears in your diff. and i have 3.90 gears in mine

Some info: 4.97:1 is an AA product. They do not have the Total Spline technology like on the :turtle: 4.7 gears.

It's really personal preference. For one tooth more, why not? :gap:
