1st time in 4wd - rear wheels chirpin?
« on: Jun 12, 2006, 06:00:56 AM »
Here is a quick question for you guys................I just had a front driveshaft made for my 85 Toy truck.  I have a Chevy 350 engine, trans and transfer case.  Im running the stock Toy front end.  I put it in 4wd lo in the driveway and was just testing it out and it barely rolls and when you give it the gas the rear wheels chirp/spin not freely but like a clock ticking (hard to describe in words here).  Ive havent had the truck in 4wd before so Im not sure what to expect.  Is 4wd lo REALLY slow and lo or do I have something binding up here? I also was on the concrete driveway so I dont know if that had anything to do with it.  Both back wheels seem to do this.  I put it back in free/2h and its back to normal driving.  It also seems to jump when you put it into gear now.......Im wondering if that has anything to do with having the transfer case all connected up now?

it sounds like the rear diff and front diff are different gear ratio's,   the rear tires  bind because the 350 is heavy enough to hold the front firmly on the ground,

mark the front and rear pinion flange and mark the diff housing right next to it then in 2wd  let a helper roll the truck back a little, i bet they dont turn the same amount

report back which one turnes the most

yeah I'll have to agree that it sounds like you have different gear ratio's in the front than the rear.

Easiest way to find out is to put the trans in neutral, the t-case in 4wd and lock the hubs, push your truck on a flat level surface don't try and drive it. If it becomes progressively harder to push and then becomes completely impossible to push the gearing is different in the axles.  Do not try to drive it this way it will not be pretty, offroad it could scrub the tires so that it may not hurt it but engaging it on pavement will lead to the total distruction of the t-case. Now comes the next step finding out what gearing you have.

I found out that the front and the rear have not been regeared.  I spoke to the guy last nite that originally put the engine swap in and did the work on the truck.  Maybe because it hasnt been in 4wd or had a front driveshaft in at least 2 years it just needed a little freeing up.  The truck seemed to be stuck in 4 lo even though the hubs were unlocked.  After some manhandling I did get it out of 4 lo and back to somewhat easier driving.  The transfer case wont go into 2 hi and I dont know that it ever worked.  Its real loose and doesnt free up the driveshaft (it still spins).  The guy said it was a K&M transfer case? Anyone ever heard of that?

Most trucks seem to try to bind and are hard to get out of 4low try putting it in reverse and back up a few feet it will take some pressure off and you should be able to shift out of 4low easier

Are the tires the same size fron to back?

you should still mark the pinnion flanges and  one tire see if they both line up after the tire has turned one time.

If not the gears do not match and that is why you can't shift it.

Jack up the front or rear and see if it shifts.
