speedy's '84 buildup
« on: May 10, 2006, 07:49:56 PM »
This is what I've started with.  I picked up an '84 from a friend with a 22r that has a spun rod bearing, a little bit of suspension lift, @#$%^@$ up bed, pretty rough but hardly any rust.

I got a 1988 Toyota pickup with a 22re for $455 on ebay, which was pretty much a rust bucket. The only thing really usable off the truck was the engine, drivetrain, and interior. Suprisingly the motor is in great shape with only 103k miles, other than some surface rust on the oil pan, which I will eventually swap out from the 22r that I have.

And this is what I want it to look like:

Plans:
The rear suspension will be a four-link setup with 14" dual stage sway-a-way coilovers and the front will be Marlin 4 or 5" leaf packs. Detriot locker in rear and I'm gonna run a toyota high pinion diff from a fj80 landcruiser with a factory e-locker in the front. Marlin crawler dual transfer cases. Twin sticks. 5.29s.  Hysteer.  38" Interco Tsl's or IROKs.  IFS brake rotors and V6 calipers and 1" wheel spacers in front.  Gonna swap out the rear axle with the '88 also (wider).  I will eventually do some light engine mods like a cam, headers, snorkel, and an exhaust.

What I've done so far:
I started by pulling the motors out of both trucks along with the complete wiring harnass from the '88, instrument cluster, steering column, computer, relays, fuse boxes and mating it into the '84. I would have taken the dikes to a lot of the harnass but my eventual goal is to have a truck that I can legally drive to the trail, although I will be trailering it on longer trips. I've also transferred most of the interior other than the dash which is going to be replaced by a custom built aluminum dash. Also installed a hand throttle.  I welded the rear diff for now until I get the Detroit.  I'm running out of cheap mods and am afraid I'm gonna have to start dumping money into her.

I took the Taco in October to the Texas Takeover Halloween weekend (the pic in my avatar was taken about two seconds before i broke my ring gear.)  I took the ugly blue one In Jan. to the Lone Star Toyota Jambo.  Everyone was like which truck are you in and I would say "the ugliest truck here" and they would all reply "oh that blue one with the %^$@% bed" and i would be like "yup"  :tease:

the story is i bought it from a guy that totally f'd up a good bed.  from the looks of it it didn't have any rust on it and if it did it had very little....... it was a california truck that moved to tx.  i found a (before) pic of it under the seat and the bed looked immaculate (for a 20 year old yota)
