bad CV???? (drivetrane noise)??
« on: May 20, 2006, 07:57:03 AM »
i got a problem on my dads Samurai. He is running a pre 84 toyota front dline and to a tracker rear axle. there is some sort of grinding noise coming out from under the truck at about 35 mph and gets worse and worse the faster it goes. we took the shaft off and ran it on jack stands and no noise. changed the angle of the rear yoke and still a noise. now im stuck and need some advice. Could the CV be bad even though the ujoints look and feel ok?  :rivers: :turtle:

Sounds like an axle bearing to me.

Take the rear shaft out and drive it on the front. If the noise is still there it is in the rear end.

You could also spin the rear up and put a long screwdriver on the axle housing and listen to the handle. If you here a grumbling in the handle it is the bearings.

Put all 4 on the ground. With rear ds removed. Locked it in to 4 wheel and took off. Lots of fun as my front is locked up. Made for an exciting ride. Still had noise. Got to the top of a steep hill. Disengaged from 4 wheel drive. Coasted down up to speed no noise. I think this eliminates rear ds, diff, and rear bearings. I think it is in either the transf case, intermediate diff or trans.. Any suggestions as to how to narrow it farther. Thanks.

I just tried some other stuff in the garage. Hubs unlocked. Rear driveline disconnected 4 hi, 5th gear it makes the noise. 4 low, 5th gear it makes the noise. In 2 high, all gears no noise. Starting to sound like tcase but dont know for sure.

OK. Sorry to keep posting but now its doing it in 2 hi but only at low rpms. Really sounds like transf case. Kind of a loose knocking growling noise. Help appreciated.

Put the Tcase in N and see what it does.

It almost sounds like the trans now. Could be a countershaft bearing?

Did you say this was in a zuki? Does this have the devoiced tcase?

check middle driveshaft and flanges, if there is one.

Also if it does have a center shaft you could remove it and see if there is still a noise and spin the Tcase to feel if it is rough.

Don't forget the screwdriver idea to check for the noise. (loong screwdriver)
