rear axel pinion seal leak?
« on: May 04, 2006, 03:14:35 PM »
When replacing the pinion seal can the nut for the drive shaft flange be tightned untill it stops or is there a crush sleave for setting bearing preload that will be squezed to tight if the nut is overtightned? The truck is an 88 4x4 4cyl. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy

If it is a solid sleeve then yes you can tighted to torque.  If a crush sleeve, then no as you chance crushing the sleeve more.

Mine was a crush sleeve.

What I did, was mark the nut and pinion shaft.  Then counted the number of rotations for the nut to come off. Then put nut back on that many rotations.

NOt the best way to do it, but I knew i'd be back into it in a couple months to regear.

Maybe someone will have better idea.

Thanks for the help. Is there any way to know if it is a solid sleeve or crush sleeve without taking it apart?

Thanks
Andy
