what to look for in a used tranny
« on: May 01, 2006, 07:45:22 PM »
I need a 5spd. tranny for my 85 Toyota 4Runner. I've found a few used trannys. What do i need to check to see if the tranny is any good. Money is on the low side so if i find a tranny I would hate to put my money into a bad tranny.  Thanks for anybodys help

the input shaft bearing is almost always the first to show signs of wear

He is right. Reach into the Bellhousing and wiggle the shaft. If it wiggles or feels loose, pass that tranny by if you don't want to rebuild it.

Yep!

Or do what we did to the 81. Snag a free tranny from a buddy's backyard, take both bad trannies, make one working one for free! And you will know how exactly to fix it next time it breaks.

EVERY toyota tranny i've ever messed with had a little bit of play on the input shaft.  never had any problems -- remember, the pilot bearing takes up some of that slack.
