Yes, well, technically the
rear transfercase fills the/all forward Crawl Box(es), beings that their are no fill plugs on a Crawl Box.
Filling from the shifter hole is a great idea but I have never done it myself. What I have done every time, is simply fill the rear Transfercase just as I would if it were a single case, and once the gear level reaches the fill hole and begins to come out, then I promptly replace the fill plug and wait a couple of mins. Then I remove the fill plug to find that the oil level has dropped by about an inch [because the oil has moved forward to fill the Crawl Box(es)]. Then I top it off for the second time and the job is done.
If I were going to fill a Dual Case setup from a shift lever hole, I would choose the hole on top of the rear Transfercase, and with the fill plug removed, start pouring oil into the second Transfercase. I would do it slowly and take 10 second pauses every now and then. Then once the oil begins to come out the fill plug, I would stop and replace the fill plug and the shift handle.
If you fill from the Crawl Box, it is possible that by the time you notice the oil coming out of the fill plug all the way at the back transfercase and replace the plug, the level in the Dual Case setup might be a bit higher than normal and you might get some oil leakage for the first couple of months of driving, *maybe*
