« on: Mar 23, 2006, 06:30:11 PM »
How much gear oil do they normally hold, and what is the best way to fill them?

Thanks

A Transfercase holds about 1.6 Quarts and a Crawl Box (Dual Case) holds just under 1 quart.

Some people remove the fill plug and the shifter, and add the gear oil through the shifter hole until it starts to come out the fill plug. But I recommend buying a simple hand pump ($9) and use that to pump the oil straight from the bottle into the fill plug until it starts backing out.

Pretty much any auto parts store will have them sitting right next to the bottles of gear oil.

Here you go: NAPA Barrel Pump (Fluid Oil Pump)

It took me a while to find it.

Napa Item#: SL SL4344
Price: $6.79

It's really cheap and simple, and if it won't fit your container then you can pour the oil into a clean oil pan and pump from there.

Does the front box fill from the rear one?  This question came up somewhere today and I was told that you have to fill the front one through the shifter hole but mine's forward shift.  That would suck!

Yes, well, technically the rear transfercase fills the/all forward Crawl Box(es), beings that their are no fill plugs on a Crawl Box.

Filling from the shifter hole is a great idea but I have never done it myself. What I have done every time, is simply fill the rear Transfercase just as I would if it were a single case, and once the gear level reaches the fill hole and begins to come out, then I promptly replace the fill plug and wait a couple of mins. Then I remove the fill plug to find that the oil level has dropped by about an inch [because the oil has moved forward to fill the Crawl Box(es)]. Then I top it off for the second time and the job is done.

If I were going to fill a Dual Case setup from a shift lever hole, I would choose the hole on top of the rear Transfercase, and with the fill plug removed, start pouring oil into the second Transfercase. I would do it slowly and take 10 second pauses every now and then. Then once the oil begins to come out the fill plug, I would stop and replace the fill plug and the shift handle.

If you fill from the Crawl Box, it is possible that by the time you notice the oil coming out of the fill plug all the way at the back transfercase and replace the plug, the level in the Dual Case setup might be a bit higher than normal and you might get some oil leakage for the first couple of months of driving, *maybe* :twocents:

Thanks mang!  I thought the way I was doing it was ok but there was a post over on pirate that actually had several replies about filling through the front case shifter hole and nobody had cleared it up.  I just wanted to make sure.  I fill till it's coming out and wait a bit and re-fill then drive 20 miles or so and check/re-fill.
