how to tell what gears?
« on: May 13, 2006, 03:34:06 PM »
is there a way to tell what gears I have? I looked at the code and it says I have a 3.58.
But i want to know short of pulling the third and counting and dividing is there another way? I think the guy that sold me the truck lied. he said 4.56's but I have trouble spinning the tires 33x10.5. he also told me the carrier was welded, its wide open so he lied there. what to do?

To accurately find out, no, you'll have to pull it out.  You should be able to pick up some 8" 4.10s pretty cheap, and with your 33s that would probably be a good all around ratio.

there is a rough way of finding out....something to do with spinning the tires and counting the driveshaft turns....

read rogerbrowns site...i think he touhes on the subject.

counting teeth is the only 100 percent way. hope this helps

oh, and when you find out..and need to regear. i'd say go with 4.56's for 33s, if it's a DD. thats my plan.

you have to change the entire housing

you could try to put a 8 inch third  into the 7.5 housing but im almost positive it wont work

Strange, cause I've run across quite a few 2wd toys with an 8" stock.

only the 1tons came with the 8" 30 spline rear.. the standard 2wd rearend is a 27 spline 7.5 diff.

ok man thgere is a rough way to tell.
1 make a line at the top bottom and each side of ur drive shaft. but make sure u know witch is witch. like use different paint for each.

2 moke a line on the tires on the bottom side 90 degres to the ground

3 jack ur truck up so both tires are off the ground. and make sure the line on the tires is still 90 degrees to the ground.

4 then spin ur tire one full time till the line is 90 degrees to the ground. as udo that count how many time the drive shaft make a full revaloution. then about how far past a full on the last revolution oast full.

say it gos just a bit past 4 times uve got a 4:10 ratio. just a bit past 4 and a half a 4: 56 ratio and just a bit past 3 and a half uve got a 3:56 ratio.

hope this helps i did it when i first got my truck and i was accurate. u can make as accurate as u want depented on how in depth u get on markin the driveshaft accuratly. but know this is never perfect but u can get a idea of what u got

Negative capn, like kyle said there were others that ran them, and like I said, I've seen tons of different 2wd toys in the yards with a G code.  I've seen em behind a few 5spds, but the majority are behind 4 speeds, 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton.  I wouldn't state is as fact if I hadn't seen so many with my own eyes.
