:inthedark: Let's do some deductions real quick, your 84 is an early 84 build...... correct?

The early 84's still had the weak 5 speed 83 trans, and that is the problem it's just that simple. The first thing to go on those is 5th gear, sounds like it may be time to upgrade to one of the stronger trans. that came out mid 84 or above. Now I'm not a trans guru but some around here would know the best one to get, though I do know that a turbo trans has a lower 1st gear and is very desirable in the offroad community.

get a quart of oil treatment ( it is thicker than gear oil and will min. the sound ) and pour it into your trany   :driving:  ( then start savin your money )

All the other gears perfectly quiet? I had a trans fail years ago but the noise got louder as I went through the gears, in that case the bearings were bad If this is your case you may not want to drive it in fear of damaging gear shafts

Most common is a waisted front input bearing.

8/83' to 5/85' G52 transmissions use the same open face 80 x 20 mm input bearing as the 83' L52.
These boxes do not have as good a service record as the later G54's with the 80 x 23 mm sealed input bearing.

If you hear noise in 1th, 2nd, louder in 3rd, quiet in 4th, and loud in 5th, it is most likely a bearing issue.

My 84 died this way, fortunatly I couldn't even really use 5th since I was sitting on 33's and 4.10's. Swaped in an 86 trans and all was good again.

I agree sounds like a counter shaft bearing, stay out of 5th and save your money for a new trans.
