7.5 Rear?
« on: Jan 19, 2006, 12:13:41 AM »
How solid is the 7.5?, is it worth putting money into or just find an 8in?. My problem is this, I broke my rear end (f372?) The pin that holds the spiders broke on me. It killed the whole thing and now I'm contemplating putting a locker in. I found a rear third it's just the one wheel peel thing. I don't really need a locker right now I'm just wondering If i broke this pin now would i possibly be risking it again? I'm going to stay open for winter but i'd like a posi for the summer. Also, my wheel bearings had some play when i pulled the axel's out. Is this OK?

Thanks. Mike.

you have a 4x2?  the 7.5 uses the same 3rd member as the ifs front 4x4 trucks use... so the yare durable, to a point, but an 8" is much better... if you dont have an 8" then you would need to do a complete axle swap over to it.....

i dont think the 7.5" came in any truck that wasnt a 4x2 in the rear... my truck is a 4x2, and has an 8" rear [g662]

i highly doubt tis the same...

in fact, i will bet that it isnt the same.... you wouldnt put dana 44 axle parts inside of a dana 70 axle... the same principle applies....

Hey man, you have a 3.58 I believe.  You might as well start looking for an 8" third with 3.90s or something, unless you don't wanna go that low.

If you want, look for a rear diff from a mid-80's corrolla GTS, they are 7.5, axle ratio is  (i forget, around 3.90 i think?) and has a factory LSD...

I believe they're 6.5", not 7.5" man.  My brother and I have both had a gts and I'm pretty sure they're smaller, but you're right on the lsd :yesnod:.  Makes for wicked fast donuts.

I'm pretty sure if we are thinking of the same toy 7.5" the third is completly different first of all the ifs 7.5 has an aluminuim front cover and is made for cv axles.the 7.5 in the 2wd pickups is also a staight axle

All i need to know is if broke the spider pin with it open, How long do you think it's going last with a locker? I have another 7.5 third member it just should i put a locker in it or wait till i have the cash for a 8in? In all my years i've never broke any thing like this and what really gets me is i did it to a toyota :-\\

I have been doing some research into this same toopic and have found that a LSD from a pre-86 Supra will work in a Toyota 7.5" rearend. Also a Detroit Truetrac LSD (911A565)  will work in this application, they make one specific for the Pickup 7.5" rearend. Check there website at

I have seen them range in price from $350 to 450. Hope this helps.

:yesnod: If I don't switch out the 7.5" in the rear of my 81 then I'll go that route, if not I'll set up an 8" with an 86.5 or newer supra lsd from pnp.  I got the last one for $35, and next half price day should score 2 more.

Pick n pull yard.  I actually got the whole center section out of a supra for that, gears and all!  Half price day, so I was only really looking at about $75 anyway.  Do you know how to read the id tags on the trucks and cars for gear size, ratio and whether or not it's open diff or lsd?  You said yours is an f, and you already know that's a 7.5" which is the same for cars, and G is 8" for both too.  Next 2 numbers are gears, while the 3rd # says if it's open or not.  Odd # is a limited slip while even # is open.  As far as I know supras and mini vans are the only other toyotas sharing the 7.5" diffs, and some of the early/mid 90s vans had limited slips too.

The previa vans had them too. Find an all trac previa and get the supercharger and the lsd rear and you would be set  . I'm staying open rear for now, cant afford a locker.

Previa, that's the name I couldn't remember!  I've yet to find one in the yard, but if I do I'll be all over it.
