5 speed transmission problem need help
« on: Nov 13, 2005, 05:02:20 PM »
hi
i bought a used 5 speed for my 86 4x4  pick up and it i was told it was a good runner
i am not going to bash anyone or even name who i got it from....... my problem
i spend all day yesterday on hill to make things worse installing the transmission
i finnished it up today new gear oil for both the transfer case and transmission
the problem is it will not go in to 1st or 3rd  gear
2nd is ok 4th is ok 5th is ok
1st and 3rd just king of grind
as if it does not engauge all the way as far as i can tell it has to be in the transmission

any ideas  i sure could use them as i need the truck to get back and forth to work

It sounds to me like bad syncros.

Mine failed 1 year 1 month after Aamco rebuilt mine 2640.00 + 300.00 for gear oil. The creeper syncro is locked up needs taken apart one day when I am feeling strong perhaps. Mopar offers the best coverage on remanufactured trans had I known what I was gonna go through, I would have went that direction for the money, 2 yr 24k warr.

This may sound really stupid, but does it have the right shifter on it?  My uncle had an old ford tranny he bought, and it wouldn't go into 1st or 3rd.  He took it apart, and the part of the shifter that goes into the tranny was the wrong size.  He too the shifter off, filed it down, and it worked fine :dunno:

well its worse than i thought i drove it around the block
yea it bad under accell it tried to pull out of gear and on
decel the shifter would go further in the hole selected
so i am thinking it needs a lot of work.............
i also worry a little about ordering from marlin on
my core i hate to ship them my core and than
have them tell me its junk than not olny am i out
my core and core charge plus the shipping

i would like to order the g54hd 870.00
plus the core charge 250.00
plus shippindg (i have no idea on the cost)
so that right there is 1170.00 plus shipping
if i knew the core was good it would not be
bad
i have a g54 (the 1st one i got screwed on)
its in good shape except the input gear has a
chipped/broken input gear tooth
and a chipped/broken 5th gear
and the case needs 2 helicoils
where the bell housing bolts on
i dont know if it is useable core ?

or just get rid of the truck  its an option

Those shafts arent cheap either A buddy of mine replaced one years ago and the sticker was 900.00 for the lower main shaft from toyota.

There is no clear answer if you need yet another trans and have no good core.

I have a good trans as a backup but it would be for road use. It moved a lot of snow and I drank alot of beers while 4 wheeling over the years, If I didnt live in PA I would make you a honest deal, closer to your end of the coast.
The shipping makes it expensive.
