1999 4Runner E-locker
« on: Sep 20, 2005, 10:31:53 PM »
Is there anyway to modify a 1996+  8.4 Housing to accomdate the 8" Elocker or will I have to buy the whole axle?

If not, I have a 1990 4Runner with V6 housing if I were to use that for the E-locker on the 1999 would the 8.4  fit on the 1999 4Runner?

The elocker will go into the 90 housing, but it's going to be a couple of inches narrower than the 96 and up. That could easily be made up with wheel spacers though.
As far as modifying the 8.4 housing for the elocker, I think your out of luck there. Unless you have the tech to be able to cut off the mounting flange for the 8.4 and weld in a new one for the elocker. It would have to be pretty perfect though, as far as depth and alignment.
You can modify any of the 8" 4cyl housings to accomadate the elocker.

Why not just modify the 99 housing to accept the e-locker?

'96-'02 4Runners had 8" rears with or without the e-locker.  Just modify the stock axle to accept the e-locker.

well he said it was a 8.4 housing,  and a 8 inch elocker,  :dunno:

if the axle codes says its a 8" in the 99 just toss the elocker on in there

the 8.4 was only in the tacomas....

the runners have an 8" rear....

you can retrofit the 8" elcoker to an 8" non elocker http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/electric_locker/

Non e-lockers are 8.4", e-lockers are 8"

The only way I see would be to put the 8" flange into your 8.4" housing. Better make sure everything's straight because those axles need to plug in straight!
