Power steering for 1st gen pickup???
« on: May 03, 2005, 01:15:39 AM »
i got a 1st gen pickup with a 20R motor, and the push pull steering setup still. But i was wondering if it is nesessary to do a power steering swap, if you build a locked & geared with 35s pickup???? if it is, what do you need to do, or get?? thank you very much

I've got an 85 without PS.  It's a 22R so I just found a guy locally that sold me the PS bracket and crank pulley from a 22RE.  I'm going hy-steer so I've got my IFS powersteering box and pump.  In your case, you will need to find the PS bracket and crank pulley from a 20R and everything should bolt right up.

cant use hydro on the street,

finda 86+ truck an get the  gear box and pump and hoses from it ,   you can use the pump with the early style gear box till you go crossover

hydro assist is fine on the street, full hydro(e.g. no steering box) is sketchy.

if you want to gain power steering and run 35s, you're going to be better off swapping an IFS box and hysteer on.  won't be much more work than just swapping to power steering.

I've seen a few 20R's with no provisions for mounting a power steering pump bracket. You may have to drill and tap some holes in the block.

if it's a stock 20R, it'll have the PS pump and fuel pump mounts('79 had electric fuel pump, 80 had mechanical pump on the head, both are the same style 20R though).  the 20R motors without the fuel pump/front PS hole are the '75-78 models.
