FREE AXLES!!!!
« on: Jul 06, 2005, 09:45:46 PM »
I just got FREE!!!!!!!!!!  axles from my buddies uncle.  There out of a 76' 2500 suburban and I wanted to ask you guys what running gear it has.  I'm almost deffenatly sure that its a front 60 and a rear 14 bolt.  I can't find anywhere to make sure but I have a 44 and its the same diff cover but deffinatly bigger.  I can't believe I'm getting them for free but hopefully its exactly what I"m looking for.  If you could help me out and tell me if they are in fact those axles that'd be awesome.  Again I know what 44 looks like and I just was HOPEING that it is in deed a 60 front.  Again if it isn't I'm not to dissapointed since its free but it'd be awesome if it was a 60.  I'll try to take some pictures of it tomorrow.  And if anyone knows if whether or not it has a turbo 400 tranny my buddy is pulling the engine out of it and hopes its a 400.  I know that it has a 208 (fulltime) transfercase and the hubs on the "d60" are auto if that helps any.

Auto hubs?  Almost guaranteed to be a dana44...  How big around are the hubs?  2 1/2" or 3 1/2"?
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

and if it has a  "d" on the shift selector, and no "d" circled, then its a 4oo, but it has a circle around it, it a 700r4

"could" be a 60 as I've heard rumor of some 60s being put into a few 3/4 ton Suburbans. Check for king pin knuckles, bigger hubs, larger cover, and of course the "60F" cast into the center section's web. The auto hubs don't mean much as I had a 60 out of an '81 that had them. For the age of the truck, the tranny should either be a TH400 or TH350. Check the pan on the tranny, 350 is square and 400 is not IIRC. The 700r4 did not come out until '82. My guess is that the t-case is a 203 and not a 208, again based on the vintage. the 203 was a full time case and I don't think the 208 came out until the mid 80s.

yeah I"m leaning toward a 60 because like I said it seemed bigger than my 44.  I'll take some pictures of it tonight and let you guys take a look.  also does anyone know the physical width of the 60 cover because I could get tell from that.  I haven't exactly crawled underneath the rig because it in a weed patch.  Oh and regarding that transfercase I that was a typo on my part I meant to put 203.  Thanks for the help guys.

OH and does anyone know what the width is on full width chevy axles wms to wms on the 14 bolt and front axle.

Look at the webbing to the lower right of the cover, if its a 60 it will have a 60F, a 44 will be a 44F. The one pictured is rear axle hence the absence of the "F" (front)

Hey new question now for you gear heads.

I need to know what all I need to convert over from auto hubs on my D44 to Manual hubs.  I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible and I just need to know all of the parts that are necessary for me to make those manual.  Hope you can help me out on this one.

Not positive on a 44 but on a 60 I did, I just replaced the autos with the manuals and that was it. The auto parts are all contained in the hub itself so if you can find a set of manuals, you should be able to just swap them out.
