Another bad day for me.
« on: May 15, 2005, 07:04:37 PM »
Welp as the family an I were pulling in to WalMart today there was some granny in front of me turning down one of the parking ilse's so when she get's turned I gas it to go on and the rearend in our minivan decides it's had enough and just makes a sound i didn't wanna hear.I looked down and the speedo was registering 70mph and I was maybe doin 20.Haven't had a chance to pull the cover off yet to see what broke, but whatever it is i'm sure it ain't gonna be cheap.

Well considering its a rear wheel drive mini van that pretty much limits you to having either a GM safari or astro van or a Ford aerostar.  Both actually use a very common rear end that is pretty easy to work on.  If you find its a ring & pinion falilure just swap the whole rear end out with a junkyard unit. ;) That'll save you some coin.

Oops forgot that one.  Yup grab your ankles and try and smile...  :hahaha:  Chances are you'll be able to find on in a wrecking yard though.  Good luck.

Yep it's an Astro.97 model. From the sound it made I don't think it was the ring and pinion.Well atleast not the gears theirself. It sounded more like spline's stripping.

Could have easily been broken spiders or side gears as well.  If your really unlucky it has a gov lock pos in it and the new one will be open...  Gov locks are worse than open diffs....

Well got it pulled apart and it was defeintly a side gear. The one on the left had broken in half where it entered the carrier at some point in time and had been riding on about 3/8 of axle spline and finally stripped the splines off the axle.Called around and the only junkyard rearend i can find has got a nice $600 price tag attached to it.I can order a new axle for 135 and the spider gear set for about 215.I think im gonna do some more searching, surely i can find it cheaper.

Holy crap really??  Too bad you aren't closer, I know there are a few in the local yard for guaranteed under $200 each complete!  SOmetimes I really hate wrecking yard just for the simple raping they attempt to do....

Close to my area there used to be a couple of u-pull its, anything you can pack out for $20.00 per trip.  My uncle packed out a 4cylinder on his own!  Good luck on the axle!  75 don't sound too bad!  Just switch out your brake hardware onto it!!

www.lkqcorp.com These guys have decent prices. When I blew the rearend in my 89camaro I called them up and had a complete rear at my door two days later for $200. Nothing beats swapping the entire housing.
