Birfield c-clips
« on: Apr 19, 2005, 09:21:04 PM »
I am going to be putting in my longfields pretty soon and i am wondering if i should put the c-clip that clips in the birflied back on.  Would it be fine if i left it off or is needed?  If the axle breaks inside the birf then i won't be able to take the broken piece out of the long.  what should i do?

That would be news to me? I believe that none of the new 30 splines with 4340 bell and 300m race have been broken yet (we're still waiting since everything breaks!). Some guy KJMCDAniel.. or something like that cracked the 4340 race and stripped the splines on the axles on some of the first prototypes. The newest ones have 300m races. BTW, that dude was doing reverse front digs.... :shocking:

I don't think they were 30 splines, that would have made national headlines.

look in the Toy FAQ on Pirate on how to Martack your axles, easy to do just takes a little time finding the right spot to place the welds.

I guess if the inner breaks off short you could allways weld a nut to it and slide hammer it out.  Not real practicle on the trail though.

if always believed that if it was put there it was put there for a reason, so i would try to put the c-clip back in. if the shaft does break theres a trick to getting it out with a stick welder
get some 7018 rods and weld them to the axle shaft, get them real hot them pull the ground clamp making them stick to the axle and it gives you something to hold on to then you can get it out with a pair of plyers.

I read a thread on Pirate and they said to leave the clip out.  they said it is not needed.  but the other two clips are important to have.

personally because lockers are different I would run the clips,,yes thay can be a biotch to remove,,but thats where your tube for the stock shock mount come in handy,,just slidit in and the bif pops right off..Or martack it would be the next option,,But I would run one or the other for sure..

I don't run any of the clips on any of my rigs and have had no preblems.  Both are welded in the front.

my buddy doesn't run any c-clips, he broke the short side inner off inside his birf, I just welded a small piece of steel to it and pulled it right out.  Its alot easier to pull the whole knuckle off to swap axles and birfs, then going through the hubs everytime.  Just my 2 cents.

Run the clip in the hub body, and the clip at the face of the star gear for the birf.  If you do not have a cross shaft in your front locker (welded, ARB, whatever) then you should also MarTack the axle to keep it from sliding into the locker and out of the birf end.

Brandon (Im4yotas) never ran the 30 splines, what he broke were the chromos that long used to sell before the 30 splines, he also wasted a couple of pigs 300m inners but the dude beats on his rig HARD  :_order:  He romps it harder than almost anyone out there which is why he bought wilson's old buggy. He wasted two yukon chromo dana 44 shafts out at the jambo last weekend.
