Front drive shaft slipping out
« on: Jan 10, 2018, 09:35:33 PM »
So I have a an 85 SA 4runner with a 3” spring and I believe a 5” shackle on 35” tires. I haven’t wheeled this rig a lot but when I have and it flexes my from DS slips out and it getting annoying. What is the best way to fix this? I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg yet for an extended slip yolk but I also don’t want to do the square DS. Am asking too much?

Yep. You will need to either lengthen your front shaft some so it doesnt slip out, but not too much that it bottoms out under compression and damages your t-case. I ran and square shaft and hated the clacking. Several companies offer long travel spline kits and you can make your own.

or you could link the front and not worry about the driveshaft as a long travel one is not needed. :)

Shorter shackle. Limit strap.
The correct fix is a long slip
hold this. . .

THanks for the advice, I didn’t want to spen the cash for a long spline slip joint but I do see that it is the best solution. I will try a spacer and see how that holds up.

Any thoughts on what extended slip joint is Best?

I went with a company that sells splined shafts and sleeves and made by own long slip shaft. Find a tube that fits one their sleeves and order the splined shaft to match. Then get to welding. I ordered two sleeves and spaced them out about 3/8" and tapped that space with a grease fitting. Never wallowed out and became sloppy. Still using it today on my linked rig.

I went with a Spicer long travel slip. I think it's 7" total travel. The only issue is then you have a 1310 u joint rather than Toyota but that hasn't been an issue. The slip itself looks super burly. I think I spent around $200 total to have it installed.

Be careful to avoid "agricultural" splines if you ever drive a little faster in 4wd. That will give you vibes. Probably doesn't matter if you are only rock crawling in 4wd.
85 4runner, 22re, 5spd, Ultimate crawler, Alcan lift that is too high, 35s, ARBs.
