check out my 1987 TOY
« on: Feb 03, 2017, 09:37:04 PM »
Hi Guys,  Ive been picking your brains on how to bring my 1987 TOY up to date, maintenance wise and modern brakes/shocks/lube etc.

It is a 1987 Toyota 4x4, 22R, Carburetor, 5spd, SnugTop Camper with Carpet Kit, Marlin Turbo Clutch Upgrade, Bilstein 4600 shocks, 31x10.50x15 Tires, Vintage Cibie Oscar lights wired through a relay and the high beam switch, KN Air Filter, Dashmat, CalCustom Seat Cover.  The Dash is perfect, the seats nearly so except for some tiny seed burns from the late 80's........

What I have planned next is a set of Brembo or ?  Rotors, Pads, Drums and Shoes.  I ordered a Stainless Clutch Line due here ?.  Marlin charged my Credit Card so lets hope soon.   I have some Redline MT90 GL4 for the Tranny and some Redline GL5 for the Transfer Case and Front/Rear Differentials. I put one of those Thermostats that is supposed to take out he air bubble and not send the temp gauge all over the place.  It helped a little.

I bought it new in September of 1987 from El Cajon Toyota.  $9600 OTD.  I get  stopped at least every other month with people wanting to buy it.  I do not think I would sell it, even for what I paid for it in 87!

I have had it down to Cabo and all over BAJA.  Mikes, Mulege, Meling, Santa Victoria, Ensenada, Valle de Guadalupe, Canon de Guadalupe.

148,000 original miles original paint too.

The bad......
No power.  Not so great in the snow.  Heater? what Heater.  The heater sucks.   Gas mileage is only 17 not including the 10% mark up for the over sized tires. MPG not so great for 2017.  My 5.3 Z71 gets better gas milage and does much better in the Snow.  No comparison in the heater.

Would I sell it?  Everything has a price but like I say not even for what I paid for it.

Thanx to all you guys for helping me with your insight and tips.

Here is a pic!

I'd buy your truck in a heartbeat too!!  I love clean 2nd Gens!

Yeah, the gas mileage isn't the greatest with our beloved rigs.  I have a 22re, and 31's, and when I go to Central Oregon, I can get up to 20-22 mpg fully loaded, and that isn't driving it lightly either!  And one long climb going up over Santiam Pass into Bend.  Usually I am pegged out at 4000 rpm in 3rd just trying to keep it at 50mph.  But gas mileage around town, I have never tried to average that out.   :shake_head:
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!

4THEWKN~9/17/2006  If it wasn't for you, I'd be driving something other than a Toyota!

I wanted to add that I put the RedLine MT90 GL4 lube in the Transmission.  At first I was wondering what the big deal is.  After a week of driving it back and forth to work.  I see what the hoopla is all about.  Nice clean shifts, seems to run smoother?  not the engine but the drive train.  I am waiting for the weather to ease up a bit and I will put the RedLine GL5 in the differentials and the transfer case.

When I pulled the plug on my tranny.  Not much of anything on the drain plug.  it was a magnetic plug.  I had bought 4 magnetic plugs to change them out.  I guess I did not need to waste my $$$.  Just some fine, powderish sludge on the magnet part of the plug.
